‘Cruel Summer’: Taylor Swift Joins Janet Jackson, Madonna, Mariah Carey, & More on List of Divas With 10+ Hot 100 No.1s

Published: Wednesday 25th Oct 2023 by Rashad

Another day, another Taylor Swift record.

For those who thought there wasn’t any more room in Billboard books for a new historic feat from the Pop diva, she’s added yet another slew of accomplishments courtesy of the unexpected lift of her 2019 single, ‘Cruel Summer,’ to the top of this week’s Hot 100.

Beyond making her the first female artist to land a Hot 100 #1 hit from 7 consecutive albums, she’s also tied Ariana Grande for most #1s this decade among women (five each).

What’s more, the Jack Antonoff-produced song’s 4-year climb to the top of the hitlist comes as the longest by a female soloist ever (among non-holiday releases).

The wins put her in exclusive Billboard territory alongside the likes of some of music history’s biggest women. See who inside.

‘Summer’ marks Swift’s 10th Hot 100 #1 hit, making her one of only a handful of female acts who can boast having reached the double-digit mark.

Look below to see who.

Janet Jackson (10)

Jackson logged 10 Hot 100 #1 hits over her illustrious career including smashes like ‘That’s the Way Love Goes,’ ‘Again,’ ‘Together Again,’ and ‘Love Will Never Do (Without You).’

She was last spotted at the Pop chart’s pinnacle in 2001 with the title track to her seventh studio album ‘All For You.’

Whitney Houston (11)

After watching 1985’s ‘Saving All My Love For You‘ become her inaugural, Whitney Houston went on to land 6 consecutive chart-toppers afterward (making her the first and only artist to bag 7 back-to-back chart champions).

She was last lifted to the Hot 100’s summit with her 1995 history-making ‘Exhale (Shoop Shoop)’ – her 11th #1.

Madonna (12)

Uniquely, Queen of Pop Madonna reigns as the first female act to amass double-digit chart-toppers when her hit, ‘This Used to Be My Playground,’ slid to the Hot 100’s summit slid to the chart’s peak in 1992.

Overall, she’s collected 12 shiny #1 smashes – a list that includes ‘Take a Bow,’ ‘Vogue,’ ‘Papa Don’t Preach,’ and 2000’s ‘Music’ (which serves as the last time she held the top spot).

Rihanna (14)

Before Taylor’s induction into this exclusive Billboard class, Rihanna reigned as the only female act to have debuted in the digital era to boast double-digit #1 hits.

Wielding a seemingly insurmountable bag of modern-day smashes, the Pop diva’s chart-toppers include ‘SOS,’ ‘What’s My Name,’ ‘Umbrella,’ and 2016’s ‘Work‘ (which serves as the last time she was served the chart’s crown).

Mariah Carey (19)

Mariah Carey is the overall most #1-awarded solo artist in Billboard’s 65-year history. Bested only The Beatles (20), Carey is the only performer to have collected a #1 hit every year of a decade.  With 91 weeks (and counting), she’s also spent more weeks in the Pop chart’s pinnacle than any other musical act ever.

Boasting a bag of 19 #1s that includes her debut single, 1990’s ‘Vision of Love,’ all the way to 2008’s ‘Touch My Body,’ Mariah became the first artist to touch the top spot at least once over four consecutive and distinct decades when her resurgent hit – ‘All I Want for Christmas’ – repeatedly topped the tally in the 2020s (over 25 years after its release).
