Hours after the unveiling of the 2024 GRAMMY nominations on Friday (November 10), the entertainment industry and its enthusiasts are still buzzing over music’s biggest night (and biggest honor).

Ahead of toasting the year’s best and brightest on February 4, 2024, the coveted tally of nods expectedly listed the likes of chart-toppers Taylor Swift, SZA, and Olivia Rodrigo as competitors for the ceremony’s top honors.

While jaws dropped to see some of the categories they were mentioned in and omitted from, fan groups of other major hitmakers like P!nk, Chloe Bailey, Latto, Travis Scott, Sam Smith, and Kylie Minogue are steam-pressed their favorites were placed in unexpected categories or totally shut out all togther.

Surprise: Victoria Monet is the year’s second most-nominated act (tied with Phoebe Bridgers).

With a whopping 7 mentions across the year’s categories, Monet – thanks to her breakout album ‘Jaguar II‘ and its housed hit ‘On My Mama‘ – landed mentions in two of the Big 4 (Record of the Year and Best New Artist) as well as in Best R&B Song and more.

Courting 9 nominations, only SZA landed more.

Snub: P!nk and Sam Smith – deliverers of two of 2023’s top Pop albums (‘Gloria’ and ‘Trustfall’ respectively) – were omitted totally.

Surprise: Jon Batiste is the year’s most-nominated male performer.

Boasting 6 nominations (including Song of the Year and Album of the Year), GRAMMY darling Jon Batiste will enter the 2024 GRAMMYs as the night’s most-nominated male performer. Among all acts, he’s locked in an extensive tie as Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eilish, Miley Cyrus, Brandy Clark, boygenius, and Jack Antonoff also landed 6 nods apiece.

Snub: Morgan Wallen nabs 0 nods

Morgan Wallen may have rendered one of the year’s best-performing albums (‘One Thing at a Time‘) and made history with its single, ‘Last Night,’ the controversial Country star won’t be making GRAMMY history any time soon as he was shut out of all performer categories.

Even the mention his work got in the ‘Best Country Song’ category will go to the songwriters if it wins.

Surprise: Kylie Minogue’s ‘Padam Padam’ becomes her first GRAMMY-nominated hit in nearly 15 years!

Snub: Kylie Minogue only nominated in one category.

For as big as ‘Padam’ and its parent album, ‘Tension,’ were, we definitely expected more attention across the board. However, Kylie – who has seen the Recording Academy ignore most of her work over the last 40 years – has long been a GRAMMY underdog and 2024 is set to keep the trend going.

Surprise: Doja Cat’s name was carved in three genre categories (Best Pop Solo, Best Melodic Rap, and Best Rap Song).

Snub: Doja Cat misses Big 4 for first time in years.

In 2021, 2022, and 2023, Cat found her name listed in one of the top 4 categories at the GRAMMYs (Album, Song, or Record of the Year).

This year, despite the critical acclaim afforded to her latest album ‘Scarlet‘ and its chart-topping hit, ‘Paint the Town Red,’ the Rap diva’s fans – affectionately called #Kittens – were seeing red when they copped a gander at the 2023 nods.

Surprise: ‘Barbie’ is all over the GRAMMY nods list.

While two songs from the blockbuster soundtrack are competiting for Song of the Year – Billie Eilish’s ‘What Was I Made For?’ and Dua Lipa’s ‘Dance the Night’ – ‘Barbie’ songs take up four of the five slots for Best Song Written for Visual Media.

Snub: Despite its many nominations, ‘Barbie’ was not listed in the Album of the Year category.

Surprise: Janelle Monae & Coco Jones wave the flag for female R&B.

Janelle Monae‘s fans were definitely pleased to see her latest album – the critically acclaimed ‘Age of Pleasure‘ – listed among the Album of the Year competitors. The nod marks her third time being mentioned in the category over her storied career, following 2018’s ‘Dirty Computer’ and as a featured artist for fun‘s ‘Some Nights‘ in 2011.

She’s also mentioned in the year’s Best Progressive R&B Album category.

Newcomer Coco Jones was definitely among the morning’s most talked about as she landed a whopping 5 nods including Best New Artist as well as Best R&B Song and Best R&B Performance for her smash hit, ‘ICU.’

Snub: Ciara and Chloe Bailey absent from the GRAMMY’s nominations list.

While her ‘Little Mermaid’-starring sister Halle made quite the splash with her first solo nod, Chloe Bailey was nowhere to be found for her critically acclaimed debut solo album ‘In Pieces.’

Ciara, on the other hand, dropped the critically acclaimed ‘CiCi’ EP on the back of one of the year’s best music videos – ‘How We Roll.’  Yet, the Chris Brown-assisted tune went unrecognized.

Surprise: Coi Leray lands MULTIPLE nods

Coming as one of the year’s most surprising first-time nominees, Coi Leray saw her name listed twice on the coveted count of nods: Best Pop Dance Recording (‘Baby Don’t Hurt Me’) and Best Rap Performance (‘Players‘).

Snub: Latto lands no nods

Quite the busy bee in 2023, Latto – arguably the year’s most active female rapper –  rendered a number of smash hits including the chart-topping ‘Seven‘ (with Jungkook), Hot 100 top 20 hit ‘Put It On Da Floor,’ and the critically acclaimed ‘Lottery.’ None of them will be cashing in on a GRAMMY next year, however.

Surprise: Ice Spice nominated for 4 trophies including Best New Artist.

Snub: Rap artists – especially Travis Scott – completely shut out of the Album, Song, and Record of the Year categories.
