Kendrick Lamar Fans Say Lil Nas X’s ‘J Christ’ is a “Walmart Version Ripoff” of ‘Humble’ / Spotify Says New Song is “Mid”

Ouch! Though wholly expecting to brave critical backlash for its Biblical references (deemed by many as sacrilegious), Lil Nas X may not have been prepared for the mixed review his latest tune ‘J Christ’ itself would get upon its debut Friday morning (January 12).

In the days leading to the arrival of ‘J Christ,’ LNX – much like with ‘Call Me By Your Name‘ (the lead single from his 2021 debut album) – ruffled the feathers of conservatives and Christians by teasing the religious content that would line the music video.

The previews couldn’t have fully prepared viewers for what they would see when the self-directed clip finally dropped as it included scenes that refer to Noah’s Ark, the crucifixion of Jesus, and more.

And while his diehard fanbase gave the Omar Fedi-produced cut and its accompanying visual two thumbs up, some Hip-Hop heads weren’t impressed – even branding the new song a ripoff of Kendrick Lamar‘s 2017 chart-topping hit ‘Humble.’

They weren’t the only ones on the fence about ‘J Christ.’

Major digital streamer Spotify took to Twitter to call the song “mid.” Look below to see how LNX responded to their criticism.

Ok, the song is OK. I feel like it didn’t need all the Christian imagery. It was overkill and added nothing to the song. And this seems like the same stuff we’ve see as far as his imagery. But I will say he’s gotten much better at dancing.
