RIAA: Post Malone & Swae Lee’s ‘Sunflower’ Makes History As the First Song Certified Double Diamond

Published: Thursday 8th Feb 2024 by Rashad

Post Malone and Swae Lee‘s Hot 100 #1 hit ‘Sunflower’ (found aboard the soundtrack of 2018’s animated film ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’) swung into history books at the height of its popularity for becoming one of the longest-charting top 10 hits ever.

Enjoying a 33 week-run in the chart region (a record for a soundtrack single and second-longest for a duet), the only collaboration to have enjoyed a longer stay in the top 10 overall was The Kid Laroi and Justin Bieber‘s 2021 smash ‘Stay‘ (which boasting a 44-week tenancy).

Nearly 6 years after its domination at Billboard, the enduring success of ‘Sunflower’ sees it planted in the record books of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) as well.

Taking to press Thursday (February 8), the RIAA revealed Malone & Lee’s ‘Sunflower’ had blossomed to double Diamond (or 20x Platinum) – a measure that denotes sales of 20 million in the United States alone. For context, Diamond denotes sales of 10 million units while Platinum equals 1 million units in the U.S.

With the update, the duo now own the highest-certified song in American history – a title that previously belonged to Lil Nas X for his gargantuan 2019 hit, ‘Old Town Road’ (which now sits at third place with sales of 17x Platinum). Second place was recently awarded to legendary rockers Journey for their timeless classic ‘Don’t Stop Believin‘ (18x Platinum).

The ‘Sunflower’ certification pushes Malone’s cumulative sales up to 134 million in the same territory.

One of the best-selling acts in digital music history, the only performers to have sold more are Taylor Swift (137.5 million), Kanye West (158.5 million), Eminem (166 million), Rihanna (166.5 million), and Drake (244 million).

The ‘Sunflower’ news is just the latest report of Posty breaking records at the RIAA.

Last year, he became the first act ever to own 8 Diamond plaques for singles.
