Chart Check [Billboard 200]: SZA’s ‘CTRL’ Becomes the First Debut Album By a Black Woman To Chart for Over 350 Weeks

Published: Wednesday 13th Mar 2024 by Rashad

Rihanna and SZA are the only Black women in the nearly 78-year history of Billboard’s all-genre album chart to own projects that have charted for over 300 weeks (the equivalent of nearly 6 years).

While Rih leads the pack with the 410-week stay of her last LP, the 2016-released ‘Anti,’ the ongoing success of SZA’s 2017 debut album, ‘CTRL,’ puts it in a unique Billboard club due to its extended tenancy on the chart.

The historic run of the GRAMMY winner’s sophomore effort, 2022’s blockbuster SOS,’ may be what’s front-and-center in the press these days, but its predecessor is quietly making noteworthy moves as well.

Printed at #31 on the refreshed Billboard 200 (as seen below), the critically acclaimed project – which houses the hit singles  ‘Broken Clocks,’ ‘The Weekend,’ and ‘Love Galore’ – continues to get love galore on the all-genre chart as it landed its 352nd appearance on the tally.

The lengthy stay marks the first time any woman of color could boast seeing her debut album rack up as many weeks.

Among all women, only Lady Gaga (2008’s ‘The Fame‘) and Lana Del Rey (2012’s ‘Born to Die’) could say their inaugural studio efforts remained on the Billboard 200 for 300+ weeks as the former’s sits at 356 weeks while the latter has collected a whopping 526 weeks!
