Chart Check: Tyla Makes History with the Billboard 200 Debut of Her Self-Titled Album – the Week’s Most-Streamed New Female LP

Published: Wednesday 3rd Apr 2024 by Rashad

Tyla may only have one album to her credit, but in the last year the 22-year-old has seen the term “history-making” attached to her name more than many acts well beyond her tenure.

As if watching her megahit single ‘Water‘ make her the first South African female to own a top 10 hit on the Hot 100 wasn’t enough to boast, she followed by making GRAMMY history when she became the inaugural winner of the Best African Music Performance trophy.

This week, she penciled in yet another historic feat to her log when her self-titled debut album opened in the Billboard 200’s top 40.

Details inside.

Tyla’s ‘Tyla’

First-Week Sales (SPS) ≈ 22,600

First-Week Sales (Pure) ≈ 3,100

First-Week Billboard Placement: #24

Peruse of the refreshed Billboard 200 sees Tyla’s debut album printed at #24 thanks to total first-week sales slightly north of 22,570.

Preceded to chart battle by the smash hit ‘Water’ and its follow-up ‘Truth or Dare‘ as well as buzz tunes ‘Art,’ On & On,’ and ‘Butterflies,’ the new project soared to its top 40 opening thanks to handsome streaming figures of approximately 26 million domestically (translating into about 19,000 SEA units).

Among new-charting releases, only Hozier‘s ‘Unheard‘ and Future and Metro Boomin‘s ‘We Don’t Trust You‘ streamed more.

When only pure sales are compared, only Shakira‘s ‘Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran‘ shifted more units over the same tracking period (among new female albums).

With the #24 opening, Tyla’s eponymous project becomes the highest-charting album on the US Billboard 200 Albums chart by a female African soloist in history.

‘Tyla’ also occupies the summit of the Current R&B Album chart.

Flop! Told ya water should be free. If it costs you, there is a problem. Just like Ling Ling’s water is limitless

It has to be, girl, when you give it to as many men as you do.

Her second week sales will be lesser than the first week. Flop ħoe couldn’t even make the top 20! She cancelled her tour because it was flopping lmao 🤣

  3. Ariana April 3, 2024

This girl is an industry plant being pushed by TikTok and Payola. She don’t even have a fan base.

Her first album and she sold more than Chloe who had more social media hype is amazing.

BUT we need to stop giving out these made history accolades. No of these ‘made history’ titles actually matter if they aren’t number one in general 🙄

  6. Key Bridge Stan April 3, 2024

So yall wrote all of this, and created fake records for a #24 debut? Let’s call a spade a spade people ….. this is a damn flop.

How the f*** was anyone supposed to eat when y’all parted the Red Sea for Bey. She’s from South Africa not Brooklyn. Yall really be disgusting to the nicest people and worship those who don’t deserve nor would ever care if they didn’t need something.

  9. Yall the biggest haters ever, I stg April 3, 2024

Yall thought she was gonna have big numbers in this sales climate is giving delulu teas. She has one hit and still building a fanbase. She seems hungry and her team looks to be solid. If they keep pushing the album (which is good) she’ll be fine. The sophomore effort will do better in sales.

It’s really a good album though!!!! All she need to do is make “Jump” the new single and go awfff with choreography!!!! She been holding back on choreo which I think is hurting her!!!! Work the s*** out of this album and perform her ass off and she can get there.
