Shakira Braves Backlash for Saying ‘Barbie’ Movie Was “Emasculating” To Her Sons

Published: Monday 1st Apr 2024 by Rashad

Shakira has spent most of her career being a symbol of strong femininity, but her recent take on the mega-successful ‘Barbie‘ movie has some fans doing a double take on her beliefs.

The global music icon was branded everything from “misogynist” to “anti-feminist” by angry social media users who got a load of her polarizing stance in ‘Allure‘ magazine recently about the 2023 film’s message and how it impacted her sons.

Hop inside to see what she said that has many up-in-arms.

In April’s cover story for ‘Allure’ magazine, the 47-year-old – hot on the promo trail in support of her new album Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran’waxed very honest about her review of ‘Barbie.

“My sons absolutely hated it,” Shaki said about the Margot Robbie-led movie. “They felt it was emasculating. And I agree, to a certain extent.”

Elaborating, the ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ hitmaker was also truthful about her stance on gender norms.

“I’m raising two boys. I want ’em to feel powerful too [while] respecting women,” she relayed. “I like pop culture when it attempts to empower women without robbing men of their possibility to be men, to protect and provide.”

Shakira is mother to Sasha, 9, and Milan, 11 (who she shares with ex Gerard Piqué).

“I believe in giving women all the tools and the trust that we can do it all without losing our essence, without losing our femininity,” she continued. “I think that men have a purpose in society and women have another purpose as well. We complement each other, and that complement should not be lost.”

While many-a-conservative cheered her statement, others weren’t so much on the bandwagon.

Why on Earth would she take her young sons to see Barbie in the first place? When my sons were young, I took them to see movies like Spider-Man, Batman, Toy Story, Shrek, Power Rangers, etc.

Its just a damn movie and I’m certain her sons know nothing of this “emasculation” that she speaks of. I know the hotep podcaster bros are gonna eat this BS up.

She is absolutely right. The movie was garbage.

And yet the feminists are silent when it comes to Palestinian women and very loud when a white and blonde actress doesn’t get an Oscar nomination. SMH.
