And, per the GRAMMY winner, it’s all related to race.

Speaking in a new interview with Dazed Magazine, tbe superstar said:
“The only reason I’m defined as an R&B artist is because I’m Black. It’s almost a little reductive because it doesn’t allow space to be anything else or try anything else. Justin Bieber is not considered an R&B artist; he is a Pop artist who makes R&B, folk music, or whatever his heart desires.
She continued:
“I simply just want to be allowed the same opportunity to make whatever I want without a label, [without it being] based on the colour of my skin, or the crew that I run with, or the beats that I choose. I want ‘F2F’ to be seen as what it is. I want “Nobody Gets Me” to be seen as what it is. I want ‘Kill Bill’ to be seen as what it is.”
Concluding on the topic, she shared:
“At the same time, it’s nothing to get bent out of shape about, because it’s just how people are processing you. As long as I don’t process myself that way. I don’t necessarily box myself into anything. I’m just trying to make music, trying to vibe out and enjoy the experience.”

SZA have a seat. You make r&b music and your audience is black, PERIOD! If whites were checking for you like that your music would sound much different and you’d be a pop star, like Janet Jackson. Don’t let your mouth create an issue where there isn’t one and ruin the good thing you have going.
I went to her concert. It’s definitely a mixed crowd.
I don’t doubt that. But white people aren’t checking for her music in droves, which is why she’s not considered a pop artist. She hasn’t crossed over. And when you listen to her music there is nothing about that sounds like pop music.

Give back those r&b grammys if you don’t like having that label and you think your music falls into some genre other than what it really is.
I’m not that familiar with her music but from what little I’ve heard, it did sound more like pop to me. I don’t think she’s R&B as in Jazmine Sullivan, Muni Long, Victoria Monet, H.E.R., and other R&B singers. I think she has a valid point, but she’s right, it’s not that big of a deal, yet the industry should stop classifying some artists’ music just based on race, it’s pretty ridiculous.

Exactly. But at the same time, they wanna say she hasn’t “crossed over.” Of course she has.
Her music isn’t R&B to me, but I don’t know what else to call it either. Pop? That’s the only thing I can think of. Heck, if Bey is Country then everybody should be able to be whatever suits their fancy.

She is an alternative R&B artist with some pop songs on her latest album! She has crossed over as well! She appeals to different audiences! That’s why she’s as successful as she is!
