Dolly Parton Seemingly Defends CMAs After Beyonce’s ‘Cowboy Carter’ Shut Out: You Can’t Overlook “Country Artists That Do [Country Music] All the Time” for a “Specialty Album”

Published: Tuesday 17th Sep 2024 by Rashad

Beyond contributing her legendary vocals to Beyonce‘s history-making last album, the Country-inspired ‘Cowboy Carter,’ music icon Dolly Parton has been among its most vocal defenders against critics who slammed the project for inauthenticity (among other critiques).

Despite her crusade on behalf of the chart-topping LP, some Bey fans (affectionately called the #Beyhive) gave the Country Queen a royal side-eye recently after the surfacing of her latest interview with ‘Variety‘ where she spoke out about the Pop diva’s unceremonious snub from being nominated at this year’s CMAs.

Look inside to see what Parton said that’s ruffled some feathers (and bee wings).

Though primarily hot on the promo trail in support of the launch of her new meal kit and cookbook, Dolly may have turned up the heat when she was grilled about her thoughts on the CMAs exclusion of content from ‘Cowboy’ from its 2024 nominations’ roster.

And while Bey’s father and former manager Mathew Knowles suggested her omission was racially motivated, Parton believes there’s another reason.

“There’s so many wonderful country artists that, I guess probably the country music field, they probably thought, well, we can’t really leave out some of the ones that spend their whole life doing that,” Parton told the interviewer, “I don’t think it was a matter of shutting out, like doing that on purpose. I think it was just more of what the country charts and the country artists were doing, that do that all the time, not just a specialty album.”

Dolly, a 10x CMAs winner, has also hosted the event in the past.

And while her commentary seemingly defended the award show and its organizers for leaving Bey out, the 78-year-old was clear that she is still a massive fan of ‘Carter.’

“It was a wonderful album. She can be very, very proud of, and I think everybody in country music welcomed her and thought that, that was good,” Dolly said.

Whitney and Dolly won record of the year. Beyoncé and Dolly won flop of the year. Hahaha

Finally a sensible opinion on the CMAs not giving B any nominations. The only nomination I might have given is for Texas Hold Em which was everywhere. That said, Beyonce even said “it’s not a country album”

So you agree she should’ve got something

      • Aj September 19, 2024

I agree they’re right not to nominate someone doing a speciality album. But a standalone nomination for song/single was fine. The album as a whole is not country and plays periodt.

Beyoncé said herself that it’s not a country album 🤷

Yet she went out of her way to feature every big country artist known to the world on it.

And yet she went out of her way to feature every popular country artist known to the world on it?

I want you to remember this, because from the way the music industry is going, TAYTAY Grammys run may be ending..the music is way to interesting out here

I don’t mind them shutting 🐝 out as long as they specifically specify that it’s because bee isn’t a country artist. Otherwise it is pure DISCRIMINATION and that doesn’t even have to be based on race, it could be based on popularity. But it certainly isn’t based on QUALITY because country music itself is BLAND so if beyonce managed to do well on the charts with this album (as already proven) her country music is clearly top tier.

I think AMC awards snubbed her but also I think the BET awards did too. Beyonce said in the album, it’s considered a genreless album. Meaning if it’s good and ask the elements are there for RnB country pop soul funk dance then it’s should be considered when talking about those kind of genres.

Yaya/ tyrant/ 2 hands are more country/RnB/pop- so BET should’ve at least nominated her

Jolene/Texas/bodyguard/black bird/16 carriages are more country

would she say the same about post malone or?

WHAT TF ARE PEOPLE MAD AT? MS. DOLLY PARTON TOLD THE ABESOLUTE TRUTH ON THIS ONE!
SORRY B-HIVE YA GIRL’S NON-COUNTRY ALBUM WAS NOT WORTHY OF A NOMINATION IN THIS GENRE!
BEY HERSELF SAID THAT THE ALUBM WASN’T A COUNTRY ALBUM-SO WHY SHOULD SHE EXPECT NOMINATIONS IN THE COUNTRY CATEGORY?!?

  9. Ummm September 18, 2024

The way Miss Dolly said in code: “Just cause you powdered that skin and bleached that hair don’t make you a white woman. Have several seats!”

While I love, love, love Beyoncé. I have to agree with Dolly. Beyoncé is an amazing artist, but even she said it wasn’t a country album.
