‘Used to Love U’ takes on a new meaning for John Legend as the Kanye West protege-turned-EGOT-winning superstar continues his unexpected beef with his former mentor.
West has dominated headlines all year long for his slew of hyper-offensive social media rants that have been deemed antiSemitic, homophobic, fatphobic, sexist, and beyond, but those tirades seemingly worsened after he began homing in on those in his inner circle including ex-wife Kim Kardashian, friends JAY-Z and Beyonce, and Legend.
The rapper-fashion mogul doubled down on his sour sentiments about all four celebs during an explosive interview with DJ Akademiks this week, taking particular aim at John.

While donning Ku Klux Klan (KKK)-inspired garb, Kanye’s bizarre interview with Akademiks saw him slam everyone from Pusha T and Kendrick Lamar to JAY-Z, Kim Kardashian, Frank Ocean, and more.
When addressing Legend, West reiterated disappointment in the dissolution of their friendship due to their differing political beliefs (namely Kanye’s blatant support of Trump).
“Look at John Legend’s sissy a–. I never did anything wrong to that ni–a. I changed generations of his life, and they got that fa–ot a–, hot sweater n–ga come up and…,” the rapper said before trailing off (as seen in the video above). “This n–ga wears sweaters in August in Barbados! They said he smelled like mashed potatoes.”
The stinging commentary came just days after Legend took to ‘Drink Champs‘ to address their fallout and Kanye’s shocking rants.
“It disturbs me, some of the things he says. I’m not as disturbed for me; some of the things he said about me I didn’t care,” John shared with the podcast hosts before saying “I didn’t take it personally.” “I feel a lot of times he’s seems to be going through sh-t and every once in awhile we’ll get these flurries of outbursts.”
All-in-all, the ‘All of Me’ maestro says he still holds his former mentor in high regard.
“It’s sad. I don’t love seeing [the rants]. I still look at him as one of the most important artists that we’ve ever had,” Legend relayed. “It’s a shame that [his legacy] gets clouded by all the other sh-t.”
At writing, Legend has not responded to Kanye’s latest diss.
