Trick Daddy Doubles Down on Belief Beyonce “Can Barely Sing”: “I [Still] Don’t Consider Her a Vocalist”

Four years after first igniting a swarm of #Beyhive attacks for asserting Beyonce “doesn’t write music” and “can barely sing,” rapper-turned-chef Trick Daddy is cooking up controversy again for doubling down on the belief.

The ‘Take It to Da House‘ hitmaker (born Maurice Young) took to the latest episode of Nene Leakes‘ podcast to dish on everything from life as a chef to love and marriage, the current status of his professional relationship with rapper Trina, and so much more.

While speaking on the demise of his radio show with his ‘Nann‘ co-star, Young was sure to clear the air that its cancellation had nothing to do with the 2021 backlash he received for criticizing Bey.

“I love Beyonce; she’s very talented and I don’t know if nobody else can entertain and perform the way she does,” Maurice shared before doubling down on his previous point. “In my defense, I don’t consider Beyonce a vocalist. I know what a vocalist is. I’m a Whitney Houston fan.”

Going on to point to the vocal stylings of Stephanie Mills, Mariah Carey, Anita Baker Betty Wright, and Shirley Murdock as evidence of what a “true” vocalist sounds like, Trick elaborated on the barometer he relies on to gauge a singer’s true ability.

“There’s a difference between ‘singing’ and ‘sanging,'” he said. “If you can’t go to the church and make an old lady stand up and damn near knock off her wig, you can’t sing to me.”

This isn’t the first time Young stood firm in his opinion about Bey’s voice as he also ruffled #Beyhive wings in 2022 when he claimed the ‘Diva‘ singer was “no Jennifer Hudson or Adele.”

He isn’t wrong. Beyonce is never a vocalist but a great entertainer and that’s it! #great gowns, Beautiful growns💅🏽

      😂 the gowns.
I mean he didn’t lie but she does have some cool runs sometimes and can do some unique stylings but yeah I don’t consider her a true vocalist and her voice now has too much base and air in it I can feel her breath.

I agree with Trick Daddy! He’s referring to singing from the soul! Just standing there and moving people with your powerful gift of singing! Beyonce is an entertainer like the one and only Michael Jackson! He wasn’t a Marvin Gaye when it came to singing but combine his singing & his dancing! He became the King of Pop! Now they call Beyonce the Queen! She’s a pop singer!

Esther Rolle needs to keep his opinions to himself. Especially since he doesn’t have anything of substance or value to offer.

Everyone’s got a right to their opinion — even if it’s way off. If Trick said Beyoncé’s voice isn’t soulful, I could maybe get that. But saying she’s not a vocalist? She’s got control, tone, power when needed — and range. No, she’s not Whitney or Celine, but she is a vocalist.

Her voice can be soft, haunting, layered in harmonies that most wouldn’t even try. She plays with phrasing and runs in a way that feels crafted but still emotional. sings scales in like I guess it could be considered as Arabic / Egypitan style…sounds ethereal, mesmerising, haunting — that demonstrates skills as……..a vocalist…

She might not “shake wigs in church”, but she’s been making people feel something for 20+ years. That counts too.

    Her voice grates my nerves

Beyoncé is one of the world’s best vocalist. She is Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter period.

Yes Beyonce’s booty and hips does most of the work. Check On It and Partition is the foundation of her career.

Just like KeKe Wyatt, Bey’s technique is perfect, but she can’t emote. Neither could Whitney (nearly blasphemous, I know!) Mimi emoted on album closers only until 2000. Patti’s too metallic, Aretha too powerful, to emote. With maybe Mary as a close fourth, Aguilera as a close third, and Tamar as a close second, Céline is the only one who gave power AND emotion.
