Two years after slamming her breakthrough albums ‘Hot Pink’ and ‘Planet Her’ as “mediocre Pop,” rapper Doja Cat has dropped her most candid confession yet about the projects’ follow-up: her fourth studio LP ‘Scarlet.’
Full story below.
Reflecting on her darker, grittier 2023 era ‘Scarlet,’ she didn’t mince words, she told ‘The New York Times’:
“No to diminish it, but it was a bit of like, I just need to get this out – it was a massive fart for me. I thought fixing that would entail making music that was more visceral or more emotional or maybe more angry or more sad. And I enjoyed performing it onstage, but it didn’t get me all the way there. So I want to return back to what I know.”
She admits that while she enjoyed performing its raw, emotional cuts live on stage, it ultimately didn’t fulfill her creatively.
So what’s next? A full circle return to her signature style – fun, playful, and unapologetically her. Her album ‘Vie’ is set to release on September 26, and she has already given us a taste of her new era with the drop of ‘Jealous Type.’
Fans, buckle up. Doja’s comeback is giving us the vibes that made us fall in love in the first place.

She wanted to be taken seriously as a rapper so bad but once all the strictly rapping singles from Scarlet didn’t move the charts like expected she flip-flopped back to Pop. Doja you used to be the one setting trends but Jealous Type is really more of the same and not in a good way. What a shame
This is why artists stop doing interviews. This headline took her words out of context. The scarlet album was amazing..she was referring to it as a fart because she had to hold in her desire to do music like that for so long because she had been placed in a box of pop. So being able to do it was a release.
Exactly! But of course TGJ would stray the headline in a more clickbaited direction🙄
Scarlet was a minor blip in what she’s capable of delivering — like it was still successful, obvs not as much as previous efforts. And would have been more so without the bashing of her fans or completing slating previous eras / success.
Scarlet wasn’t exactly a 100% rap / hip hop album but there was definitely more of a push in that direction. And the shift from Planet Her to Scarlet wasn’t that much of a flop…..for example, random comparison but cba to think of another, so like Demi’s shift to punk was so out of touch with her brand and aesthetic, it was not good overall. Where as Scarlet still had elements of authenticity. If Doja had shut her mouth and perhaps reworked some tracks so that they were more pop driven/improved hooks/better collabs throughout, it would have been stronger, but I don’t mind it.
Doja just shouldn’t have been so adament to prove she’s a rapper. She can rap, yes. But her discography / most successful / critically acclaimed / well received songs are clearly pop-leaning crossovers.
Songs from Scarlet like Agora Hills, and Paint The Town Red, and Demons were still successful because they each had storytelling
/ strong hooks
/ range and momentum happening in each
/ clear visual identity across the whole era
/ viral moments
/ some songs stayed in hot 100 for decent amount
/ live performances and tour was successful
— also showed she’s capable of performing without the need for smoke and mirrors….not that that’s a bad thing, but without tons of dancers of choreography…. throughout etc. etc. she’s clearly got stage presence.
I’m a fan (I would never call myself a kitten, whoever started that…not worth getting into) and could care less about her attacking fans.
Anyway. Glad she’s back to leaning into what she’s best at — the playful / quirky / creating work that is fun, with a mix of pop and rap, without trying to be toooooo serious.
Only mistake for THIS era — should have been released Vie like a month earlier. She took way to much time to figure thngs out. But I think I read somewhere that she did cancel recent festival commitments to ensure Vie is ready to release
… there’s just waaaay too much competition / oversaturated albums being released like end of August and throughout September.
No shade but scarlet is her worst album ever… no bops but a bunch of flops
Its not all about bops. Music has more purpose than that.
Sure but apart from Attention it’s not like the Scarlet tracks where she’s flexing her skills have a lot of “purpose”
Doja is a great artist but very annoying 🙄
She’s better off seen than heard….
And this album is going to sell even less than Scarlet due to her antics. She clearly never really had proper PR training 🙄
