Pharrell Williams believes T-Pain is uniquely equipped to deliver something R&B is currently missing.
Indeed, the hitmaker used a surprise phone call to issue his fellow music maestro with a direct creative challenge and explain why he feels the moment is his to seize.

During a recent livestream, T-Pain answered a call from Pharrell, who skipped the pleasantries and immediately pressed him about his next musical move. He said:
“What the f*** are you doing, man? There’s no one in your way. No one can make R&B that’s missing like you.”
The Virginia native then expanded on his point, making clear that he was not merely asking for another song. He cast T-Pain as an artist capable of reconnecting the genre with an emotional and cultural quality he believes has faded.
“You make it look easy. I feel like you’re the bridge to bringing back R&B to what I feel like it means to Black people. You are the bridge. Ain’t nobody like you, bro. And you got the personality of the youth, where the youth would gravitate towards you.”
T-Pain appeared receptive to the assignment and promised to give the idea serious thought.
“True that. I f*** with that. Let me put my right brain on it, and I’ll reconvene, if you will.”

T-Pain can actually SANG auto tune doesn’t make u a singer. I guess you never saw him live he sings better than a lot of these guys out here.
I think he’s a better producer than an artist – maybe that’s what Pharrell means.
I’m sick of this narrative that r&b or hip hop is dead and we need certain ppl to bring it back. There is so many good artists out, maybe just not in the mainstream space but with how easy it is to directly access music now, we really need to support these artists.
R&B isn’t dead. It just seems like no one is investing in or promoting the newer artists.
R&B is definitely dead. There isn’t a female in R&B that isn’t a blonde headed heaux whose main subject matter is thex, and there isn’t a male in R&B that has anything to say about anything other than thex either.
