The MTV Video Music Awards have long billed themselves as one of music’s most unpredictable nights. Yet, following the 2026 ceremony, many viewers had one very simple question: where were the actual awards?
Indeed, despite a stacked winners’ list that included major names such as Cardi B, Kehlani, and Bruno Mars, a sizable chunk of the Moonperson moments never made it to the live broadcast.

Per the official Paramount winners release, only six competitive categories were marked as “presented in show”: Video of the Year, Artist of the Year, Best Collaboration, Best Dance, Best New Artist, and Best Pop.
That meant several headline categories, including Song of the Year, Best Hip-Hop, Best R&B, Best K-Pop, Best Latin, Best Country, and Best Alternative, were announced off-air.
The omission did not go unnoticed. As The Guardian noted, Madonna and Taylor Swift won four of the six awards handed out during the telecast, while genre-specific wins were largely pushed outside the live show.
For TGJ readers, the snubbed screen time was especially glaring given who was impacted. Cardi B and Kehlani won Best Hip-Hop for ‘Safe’, while Bruno Mars bagged Best R&B for ‘I Just Might’. Neither moment aired live.
Of course, the VMAs had a lot to squeeze in. The CBS telecast was delayed by an NFL overrun, and the show itself juggled performances, tributes, commercials, and honorary moments. Still, for an awards ceremony, leaving so many award wins to a post-show list was always going to raise eyebrows.

Racism…pure and simple. They are erasing black folks from the award shows little by little. We have 0 black pop stars in today’s time. Give it 5 more years and we will be back on the chitlin circuit with album covers showing photos of grace and skys instead of the actual black artist. Like they did it in the 50s and 60s
