Netflix Acquires Wu-Tang Clan Documentary 'The Disciple' About the Secret $2 Million Album

Wu-Tang Clan’s most mysterious musical experiment is heading to Netflix, and the streamer has unleashed the first official trailer.

Directed by Academy Award winner Joanna Natasegara, ‘The Disciple: A Wu-Tang Fable’ chronicles the unlikely journey behind the collective’s one-of-one album, ‘Once Upon a Time in Shaolin.’

Full story below…

The documentary centers on Dutch-Moroccan superfan Tarik Azzougarh, better known as Cilvaringz, who worked his way into Wu-Tang’s circle and became a driving force behind the audacious project.

Recorded in secret across six years, the 31-track album was manufactured as a single physical copy and sold for a reported $2 million in 2015. Its conditions prohibited a commercial release until 2103.

As TGJ previously reported, RZA executive-produced the documentary, which explores the record’s creation, sale, controversy, and broader statement about the devaluation of music.

The newly released official Netflix trailer brings that unusual history into focus, tracing how fandom, ambition and a challenge to the streaming economy collided.

Following its Sundance premiere and theatrical run, ‘The Disciple: A Wu-Tang Fable’ arrives on Netflix on October 16.
