John Legend is no stranger to using his art to raise awareness and shine light on social issues, but the cinematic music video for his latest single ‘Fireflies‘ may be his most poignant yet.
A black-and-white affair, the Paul Hunter-directed clip tells the story of modern Blackness in America – a dichotomy of optimism and oppression.
Tackling tough topics such as systemic racism, police brutality, poverty, and more, ‘Fireflies’ addresses despair and hope in a masterful way with its powerful imagery and lyrics.
“I, I’m a candle in the dark / And I come from a divine spark,” he sings before declaring, “And I’m my ancestors’ thoughts / And their wildest dreams, their wildest dreams.”
Accompanied by the Hollywood Cinematic Orchestra, the video for ‘Fireflies’ follows the single ‘Daylight‘ as tastes from Legend’s October 23-due new album ‘Muse.’
