Braving a storm of competition from the likes of Hip Hop heavyweights Pharrell and Rick Ross, ‘I Got It’ songstress Ashanti finally gets to see her 5th studio album ‘BraveHeart’ aboard digital shelves after a series of setbacks.
A nod toward reclaiming her throne as crowned princess of Hip-Hop/R&B, the title is an intentional ode to the 1995 Mel Gibson movie where Ashanti similizes with the main character William Wallace (portrayed by Gibson). Yes, while lacking the army and arsenal (which translates to major label financing and PR machine in her case), the ultimate comparison is certainly found in her ‘little engine that could’ displays of bravery and spirit…
‘Braveheart’ reintroduces the songwriting chanteuse as a woman having experienced the ups and downs of love, public betrayal, and disappointments who also gathered the strength to write about it. Decorated by an eclectic mix of 15 tracks, the album features a range of styles from the “Ratchet & B” of “Count” where the singer challenges a lover to make it rain with dollars to the catchy earworm hook of the French Montana-assisted “Early in the Morning”.
Also featured are several euro pop/R&B numbers like “She Can’t” and “Don’t Tell Me No” and the sure to be a summer hit reggae inspired “First Real Love” featuring dancehall king Beenie Man. With no shortage of features (including Jeremih, Rick Ross, and the previously mentioned Beenie Man, French Montana), the guest-list heavy album is a sure throwback to the singer’s glory days. And, despite opting to dismiss formerly christened lead single ‘The Woman You Love’ ft. Busta Rhymes, the album is still a very solid body of work on the vocal and conceptual tip.
If anything, ‘Braveheart’ proves that the quality of the product is still there. The only thing absent from ‘roll call’, so to speak, is the machine that so few independent artists can boast they have.

Arguably, the last time we saw Ashanti dare to do so was via her 3rd studio album ‘Concrete Rose’.
Nevertheless, the album is unapologetically ‘Ashanti’ – bass driven R&B, rap-feature heavy, and dripping with romantic numbers throughout.

It’s such a shame that people are obsessed with who is the hot thing of the moment rather than just appreciating the quality of good work, i’ve bought Braveheart, i will admit I have not followed Ashanti for years but after watching her interview and seeing how intelligent, business savey she is, i will support any artist who takes the indie root rather than being ripped off and left broke just for commercial success, it proves that she is all about the music.
Braveheart is absolutely brilliant, if you want an album that has great songs, with depth, brilliant songwriting, that has strong hooks and melody’s and songs that actually have timeless classic feel to them yet fit perfectley into todays R&B with slick production, Braveheart is the album for you, I’m very pleased with it and i think she’s done a great job, i forgot what a great songwriter she is and also her vocals sound better than ever. Well done to her she is true artist! 9/10

Why can’t people just appreciate the hard work that people put into making their music. A lot of you people that come on to these blog sites post a lot of negative comments. Unless it is one of your favorites its BS that people type. Just cuz her music is not playing heavy on the radio does not mean her music is not good. Cut the bull. Braveheart is a great album with great songs. I have a bit of a soft spot for Ashanti. I’ve always been drawn to mellower voices because of their ability to stylize their instrument as opposed to those run up and down a scale. That being said, I am not completely sold on this album which is kinda sad because I admire the strength, hard work and determination that went into creating the album because she’s indie. However, the songs just seem average but it’s her most cohesive effort to date. My fav Ashanti album will always be her debut but the thing with her is that she has great singles but borderline boring albums. And y’all need to QUIT with bringing up Bey and others. I love Beyonce but this is an Ashanti post so why bring her up.

As you can read in the Breakfast Club post, I am a woman of my word. I purchased the album. Here’s my opinion.
Album Art & Album Cover: A-
The poster (album booklet folds into one) inside is beautiful; I don’t care for the fact she is naked on the picture behind the CD, but to each of it’s own. She’s beautiful af so she can do that. The album cover probably her best album cover in her career.
Material: B+
The material on the album features a limited budget (think along the lines of Tamar: Love & War, Brandy: Two Eleven, & Monica: New Life and pretty much every new R&B album due to the lack of Interest of the GP), but she actually pulls it off. I think the standard edition should have ended on the RIP song the way the deluxe Target edition did. I loved the intro. Very strong way to open an album after not releasing since 2008. I think she has a few stand outs like RIP, Runaway, and more. You will have at least 5 tracks if you truly listen and understand where she is coming from. If I may though, she needed to keep The Woman You Love on there even if it was a deluxe edition purchase.
Vocals: B-
Some may say the ever so popular line, “Ashanti can’t sing.” However, since watching her sing The Woman You Love live on GMA back in 2012 or 2013 (can’t remember), I have changed my thoughts. I now hear the depth, on key, and overall growth in her voice. While her tone is the same, she is vocally stronger than EVER. She’s not the greatest singer in the world, nor will go down in history with Tina, Aretha, Whitney, Mariah, or not even the generation of Beyoncé, Adel, Christina, Tamar, etc, but she is not the worst. I think she will continue to grow.
Songwriting, Lyrical, & Meaning: A+
This my friend is simple to speak on, because simply she did that! As if growth in vocals wasn’t good enough, she simply has grown lyrically. I don’t need to say much here, the rating above explains it all.
Overall: 89/100
Ashanti has survived during the destruction of Murder Inc, managed to be still following her dreams, has become business savy, more beautiful (naturally done from my view), and etc. I can’t do anything but hope you listen (actually listen), and enjoy the record. There are about 3 misses on the record. I like the Beenie Man song, but ending the standard edition on that note wasn’t intelligent. I plan to continue listening and will buying the album digitally next week to help out second week sales. I hate that you all can’t see past the smoke and mirrors that Ashanti and so many more artists (Mariah: … powerful men with a certain agenda. Is a good example) tell you blatantly. Yet you run to the most blatant obvious devil worshipping artists who tell you I Am your God, your King, your Queen, and etc. Didn’t Katy Perry have to re edit her video for Dark Horse (#1) for the obvious Illuminati symbolism? Yea it was entertaining, but don’t take away from other artists like Ashanti who are following their dreams. Get your check Ashanti. Either way it go, 200,000 total = about $900,000+ after all is said and done. Guess who the royalties go to? Ashanti not the machine. Quit letting music control you. May God bless. Peace.

R.I.P should have been on the standard editions, or at the least on the ITunes version(so that people at least have the option to purchase it)…..it’s one of her lyrically, sonically and vocally strongest songs and def stands out. Surprised, especially with the concept of the album, that this didn’t make it.
