MTV Considers Major VMAs Shake-Up

MTV is considering changing the way in which its viewers consume the Video Music Awards.

Full story below…

This year’s ceremony was viewed by 6.5 million viewers, a far cry from the 9.8 million viewers who tuned in the year before.

One reason behind the sharp decline? Streaming.

For, the 6.5 million viewers who tuned in did so via the 11 platforms MTV’s parent network Viacom aired it on and only offer a portion of the show’s entire viewership picture.

Billboard explains:

The network said Tuesday that there were 149 million streams of VMA content online Sunday and Monday, a combination of live streaming through MTV’s website and aggressive packaging of video clips on venues like Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and the like. The majority of streams (86 million) came Monday, after people heard or read about the show and wanted to check out clips, MTV said. MTV traditionally airs the show live at 9 p.m. on the east coast, and at the same hour via tape delay in other time zones. That follows the common television rule of placing content at a time when advertisers will pay more for commercials.

With this in mind its president Sean Atkins shared:

In a world where you are multi-platforming, when I can experience it on my feed from my friends on Facebook who are in New York, are you better off just going live? You give everyone essentially equal access to every platform at the same time. Gone are the days where TV is where you go to.TV has to come to you.

Quite interestingly, the show’s numbers would have been even lower if not for Beyonce‘s fifteen minute presentation of ‘Lemonade.’

For, it was the most-streamed portion of the entire show.

What do you think about MTV’s proposed plans to air the show live at the same time for all of its U.S. viewers?

The Navy is bitter as hell about that award show! If Rihanna had any true power, her team would never allowed Bey to have more air time than her on what was suppose to be her big. Night. Notice MTV didn’t pull that mess when she won hers back in 2014.

      • wrosy3 September 2, 2016

Stfu you dirty gingervitis b**** no navy gives a f*** about old dry p**** Beyonce

      • Meme September 2, 2016

And you are proud to say this?

Beyonce has been jealous of Rihanna for years. She obvious felt some type of way and threaten by Rihanna that she would have to perform 15mins on a night that was not hers.

Whether her performance was better or not, it was such a lack of respect. When it was Beyonce night, she performed her 15mins with no other competition. Why couldn’t she just perform 4mins like everyone else,”?

Lastly, you are crazy if you think Beyoncés performance was more captivating than Rihanna. Beyonce did the same ole recycled wardrobe, dance moves, routine and she lip sing 80%. She’s a 1 trick pony. Everytime she performs it’s the same damn ass shaking, trying hard bull.

        Bye girl

      • BEY>RIH September 2, 2016

Pressedt!! Bey’s performance still would’ve been more captivating and talked bout than frih’s even if it was 3 mins long.

      • Lewey September 2, 2016

“Take what’s mine, I’m a star! Cuz I slay.” That is so true about beyonce. No one moved aside to let her shine through out her solo career. She took her career and perfected her craft and doesn’t care what anyone else is doing. It didn’t matter whose night it was, BEYONCE is a star and she is going to slay regardless. I’m tired of these lazy ass performance from other artist. They need to really take the time and perfect their craft. What Rihanna did was lazy to me. Beyonce have her all and it showed. I think Rihanna is extremely talented, but lacks drive or determination to be the best.

sooo… what EXACTLY is MTV or this article stating that will change for next year’s viewing? this website has a habit of posting headlines that then offer very limited or empty content. EXPLAIN IN YOUR OWN WORDS as “bloggers” what the changes or wpdate in viewing/broadcast will include.

    • Side to Side honey September 2, 2016

It’s pretty clear if you read it. They’re going to air it all the same time.

    • Bey Sting September 2, 2016

I agree beyonce does bring the power because people want to see her she’s that chick right now.
But the president has a point no one watches tv in this electronic world we live in.

In other words, I’m upset at britany spears her performance was very boring and that lip syncing bull crap has to stop we want real talent britany

    Next>>>>

    • XoMoDe September 2, 2016

Basically. I didn’t watch. I can’t reconcile MTV even still having the VMA’s when 95% of their programming at music videos. Watching them award something that they don’t even pay.

  6. MUSICHEAD September 2, 2016

Another bait and click headline. There is no mention of a “major shake up” in this article. This is just about the show going live in all time zones. I’m so sick of these wack articles lately. My run here may soon be over.

Even wifh streaming, this award shows will still fail. The VMAs is the Madonna of award shows, decades of clinging to shocking moment, nothing else. Now that you jave the AMAs, Billboard Awards, iHeart, YouTube and so on with the same few pop performers, there’s no standout. Rihanna reggae set has the nost views, so i don’t see how that other girl saved the show. We have two HBO flops and two dipping Superbowl Shows thay proves that Beyonce is no driving force when ot comes to viewership. And her low stream count on her albuma and singles shows that shes no streaming force. Streaming is killing tv and guess who’s the most streamed female this year? Rihanna. Lol

    • Alex September 2, 2016

@mark Bey is not a streaming force, yet she set the record for highest first week albums streams in history when she dropped lemonade?? Sit your ugly ass down! Even MTV stated that Beyonce stole the show. Stay mad cuz your TALENTLESS fave only got 2 moonman! Lmao!!!

  11. How Many Drinks September 2, 2016

Beyonce is Queen of the VMAS. Most awarded female in history, she has the most watched performance in history (Love On top) and her performance at the last show upstaged all your faves. Id be upset too.

  12. How Many Drinks September 2, 2016

Tishawn is what time wrote *Sips Lemonade*

Beyoncé Aside, a Disastrous VMAs Reveals an MTV in Crisis

This show felt thin, even by VMA standards

    Thank goodness for Beyoncé.

MTV’s creative side and viewers alike can join in praise for the singer, whose electric performance of several songs from her album Lemonade saved this year’s Video Music Awards broadcast. It may be just about the only thing they agree on.

Prior to Beyoncé’s appearance, deep into the broadcast, the show had been uncharacteristically muddled. Sure, the VMAs, MTV’s sassy answer to the Grammys, have long forged iconography out of an absolute refusal to set limits; that’s how we ended up with moments from Madonna’s “Like a Virgin” to Lady Gaga’s meat dress. But this year’s broadcast’s particular messiness seemed less like the raw material for potential greatness and more like a show put on by a network that has lost its touch both for spectacle and for simple appeal.

Just about every producing decision in the show seemed, simply, wrong. Rihanna, the recipient of the lifetime-achievement Video Vanguard Award, did not get the sustained 15 to 20 minutes recent recipients Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé and Kanye West got. (Timberlake and Beyoncé put together titanic tributes to their own legacies; West, last year, delivered a speech testifying to his own genius.) She got four performance slots scattered through the evening, with as much haphazardness as she herself sometimes seems to devote to her own career. But Rihanna’s lack of aggressive long-term planning is a sign of confidence, while MTV’s proved exactly the opposite.

      ***^^^This is What TIMES wrote***

  13. B2B September 2, 2016

I will say my peace and leave it alone if I can. LOL. Beyonce’s Grammy performance from 2010, Stevie Tribute from 2015, and 2016 VMA performance can not be touched. The class, sass and unpredictability is second to none. Freedom at BET Awards was hot too.

  14. sashay September 2, 2016

How does Sam know that Bey’s set was the most streamed? I don’t see that mentioned in what was quoted from the article.

    • Jay September 2, 2016

      Mtv stated it on twitter

  15. B2B September 2, 2016

And Navy, be clear this was suppose to be Rih night. Everyone should tune in to hear those hits. Yet no one wanted to see her and there was nothing to see!!! LMAO Yet you all cling to Anti being in the top 10… Should it not be? Rih has singles that that are streaming up a stream hence why the album rises only on the streaming chart.

  16. king September 2, 2016

Leave it to that grape juice to over hype something. Mosy shows are loosing viewers due to streaming. Why do you think apps like Netflix, Spotify, YouTube, and Tidal are just to create original content for their apps. Why you think more artist are starting to do exclusives with spotify, tidal, apple music. Because streaming and digital downloads are surpassing physicals sales.ppl are just trying to keep up with the times

We love in a world that has been built off technology and it’s advances but I’m not for this. Honestly I feel that the Internet has been just as negative towards the arts as positive. The mystic is gone. It’s not fun anymore.

    • LB September 2, 2016

The internet levels the playing field and gives consumers more choice, this is good for the growth of the industry as well as consumers.

    • Taylor Swift-To-Find-A-New-Man (Slayty) September 2, 2016

How is airing the show live at the same time for everyone around the country wrong and ruining the art? Lol what are you even saying?

  18. LB September 2, 2016

Well streaming boomed up close to 900% and Rihanna’s reggae set is the most streamed, let’s not forget the world is still freaking out about AubRih, I can see why MTV would go with airing the show at the same time and making it available on multiple platforms.

Overall, I still think award shows don’t have the appeal they once had anymore.

On a side note: No one can convince me a person who fails to garner more than a million viewers ON A FREE HBO NIGHT saved the show, the numbers do not support this assertion.

    • Briano September 2, 2016

And they aired it again with even less viewers

  19. Taylor Swift-To-Find-A-New-Man (Slayty) September 2, 2016

The VMAs have been stale consecutively since 2014 tbh. They need to bring back hosts. As someone who lives on the west coast, making the show live is great. I never watch on TV because its already available across the internet and social media the second it happens

  20. B2B September 2, 2016

Bey is not steaming force? What was the most streamed song of the 2000s? I’ll give you a hint, it was not a # 1! 2 days to BDAY Navy whats really good? I wanna clock and pour tea!

“Rihanna reggae set has the nost views?” receipts needed.

HBO flop? OTR Tour still grossed 100M with 21 dates. Something Anti tour has yet to do with well over 70 dates i know!

And for the record, Rihanna’s album is available on every format there is. So kudos to her for being most streamed.

And dont get me wrong I actually like a few cuts from ANTI but its no competition for Lemonade. That album is really good as was BEYONCE and 4. I think that this is Rih’s first album that actually has substance since RR and yall just hyped. Y’all need to cut it.

  21. well well September 2, 2016

the heck is this about? money for advertizers? who cares about ads? who cares about everybody or the whole show anyway? the way it looks it’s written, they “complain” that some people only watch what they wanna see? ofc they watch a recording a day later. i haven’t watched it at all. nothing of interest… actually. 😀

  22. B2B September 2, 2016

“On a side note: No one can convince me a person who fails to garner more than a million viewers ON A FREE HBO NIGHT saved the show, the numbers do not support this assertion.”

YET SHE CAN SELL OUT A WORLD TOUR WITH NO ALBUM.
ON A SIDE NOTE, FRANK OUTSOLD THIS HO FIRST WEEK. NO SINGLE BY THE WAY

  23. FASHION_ICON ~ Anti&Lemonade September 2, 2016

She’s been donating money to the black lives matter movement SINCE Trayvon Martin’s death back in 2011 and rebuilding homes for the victims of Hurricane Katrina SINCE 2005. Just to name a FEW things that she’s done . Do your f****** research stupid uneducated b****.

Rhianna perpetuates 3 of the biggest black stereotypes: Drug use, violence/domestic violence, and laziness. Plus, she does nothing for the Black community. She can live in OUR COUNTRY and reap the benefits of OUR labor but doesn’t even care enough to speak up about the injustices that we face.

      • Blue Ivy Rod September 2, 2016

Yes because now that Beyonce made an album that loosely explains prejudices nor calls anyone out for their racist remarks, you can shade Rih and say she doesn’t care about black live in the states.

One she does care about black lives and she doesnt have to use it as a gimmick to sell records or get support of blacks anywhere.

Two she always gives back and somehow within your pea sized brain you think she doesn’t. Remember the Diamond Ball? Remmeber her giving out scholarships? REmember her giving back to kids in Africa who has contracted H**? Remember her giving away free state of the art equipment for a hospital in Barbados? What has Beyonce done for YOUR community except charge you for a “BLM” concert and visiting a few victims of Police brutality?

      • Briano September 2, 2016

        Huh? You Sound ridiculous.

      • Amerikkka’s Most Wanted ~tyler September 2, 2016

B**** Beyoncé has always used her platformed to bring awareness to certain issues .From attending the march for Trayvon Martin (which was PRE-Black Lives Matter Movement back in 2011), bailing protesters out of jail, aiding the victims of Katrina (2005-present), bringing light to this issue- risking losing white fans and being black mailed- during the half time superbowl which is watched by a billion people, and using proceeds from her tour to help aid poisoned victims in Flint because of the water crisis. This what Beyoncé has done and we can see that. So with all due respect have several seats. Rhianna is a black woman who just so happens to reside in the states. So don’t try to bash Beyonce when your fave isn’t trying to do any muthafucking to bring awareness to what’s currently going on

I never understood why shows many of which are filmed in Los Angeles are aired at a later time in the same region/city! So annoying. With social media spoilers these days it can affect viewership. Idc if it’s the Big Brother finale or a major award show like the VMAs they should air across the nation it’s filmed in and for… At the same damn time, in that order (hey Moma Dee)!

Idk why this isn’t or hasn’t been a practice. Love watching live award shows in LA.

  35. JOHNVIDAL September 2, 2016

Rihanna definitely didn´t bring attention to the show. It´s just like when her albums drop, no anticipation whatsoever. The semi success only comes in the “long run” after pushing and pushing and releasing 7 different singles ready to be played on radio. She´s nothing without that.

Anyway, it is hard to tell when someone DOES bring attention to an award show and when the ratings increase by it. The only obvious example that comes to mind from the last years are the grammys ceremony from 2012, when ratings were the highest in years because Whitney mutherpucking Houston had just died and because it was Adele´s year (a true sales phenomenon we hadn´t seen in 15 years).

  36. HailLegendBeysus September 2, 2016

YAY!!!! Bey’s pure album sales are 26,720 up 102% her over all DPS stats are 38,870 giving her an over all 99% increase!!! She did better than expected!!!
