The British Olympian Louis Smith has been pilloried both fans and critics after a video of him seemingly mocking Muslims was published online.
Details on the Brit’s problematic move below…
In a video obtained by The Sun, the athlete is seen holding a camera to his face and to a friend yelling ‘Allahu Akbar’ while pretending to pray on a rug.
Smith then jokes that his friend is carrying out his “six o’clock prayers” as they mock Islamic prayers by screaming wildly and saying the words “sixty virgins.”
Mohammed Shafiq, chief executive of the Ramadan Foundation, said this in response to the disrespectful clip:
I think he should apologise immediately.Our faith is not to be mocked, our faith is to be celebrated and I think people will be offended.
Luke Carson, the friend in the video, released the statement below once he learned of the visual’s surfacing:
It was a three-minute video of us just fooling around.
Smith is yet to respond.
