It’s all systems go for the long-rumored sequel to Eddie Murphy‘s 1988 romantic comedy, ‘Coming to America.’

Details inside:

Less than four months after reports began swirling that Murphy was hard at work on the follow-up to the now classic comedy (as we reported here), it’s been confirmed the film’s been green lit.

Report:

Paramount Pictures is setting Craig Brewer direct ‘Coming To America 2,’ finally bringing to the starting gate the sequel to the 1988 blockbuster comedy. Murphy is set to reprise his role as Akeem.

Kenya Barris [‘Black-ish,’ ‘Girls Trip’] is rewriting a script by original Coming to America writers Barry Blaustein and David Sheffield. Murphy is producing with Kevin Misher and Barris is exec producer.

Murphy confirmed the news via an official statement:

“After many years of anticipation, I’m thrilled that Coming to America 2 is officially moving forward. We’ve assembled a great team that will be led by Craig Brewer, who just did an amazing job on ‘Dolemite,’ and I’m looking forward to bringing all these classic and beloved characters back to the big screen.”

As of time reported, there is no release date scheduled.

No. I’m taking a hard pass. I dont see a need for this unless Eddie need money all of a sudden to pay for those 10 kids. Sometimes sequels aren’t needed! Or reboots….

No…..These are Corny times and this will be an F for Fail. People are sick in da head and ain’t got no common damn sense to be humored. Eddie you have to be with da janky times to pull this off. Eddie your originality doesn’t fit. They are in a comfort zone of copy and paste taste. It’s not divine time;l it’s treacherous with smoke and mirrors. They’ll pull at your neck, then go after your past, financial trouble since Narcissism is trying to leave a mark. Eddie keep sitting back cause it’s getting juicy.

It’s not a remake. It’s a sequel. So quick to say something doesn’t need to be done but don’t even have your facts right. Damn even the article says Part 2.

SHUT YOIR GHETTO A*S UP! I can’t stand ratchet chicks. Whether it’s a remake or a sequel, the legacy would still be ruined. The film should not be touched & most others agree.

Hope Arsenio comes back as well, that movie is timeless. I think they should try to keep the followup story simple. Sequels sometimes tend to go too far. It will definitely be a fine line to walk and a tough act to follow. Eddie and Arsenio were at their prime at that time. I hope they can rekindly some of that magic. I think this will most be supported by folks who grew up in the 70’s and 80’s.

Honestly… I feel some classics should be left alone, and this is one of them. In this climate of lack of originality; 31 years later I doubt hollywood producers, writers etc. will be able to top or even be on par with the original.
