R&B star Keyshia Cole has hit the promotional trail for new single ‘Long Way Down’, moments ago performing the song on the Tonight With Jay Leno Show.
With an album a mere weeks away from release (and a lukewarmly received lead single in ‘I Ain’t Thru’ to boot), the new mother needs to ensure she nails every promotional spot she hits. Check out how she fared after the jump…
Following a somewhat shaky start, Cole found her wings to soar vocally during the performance.
That said, the roughness that used to be part of her appeal, now has her trailing behind her peers when it comes to working the stage and image. Put simply, the 29 year old looked like she walked on stage enroute from the mall or bus-stop. Not much in the way of finesse or polish. By no means the biggest of issues for the talented star; yet (unfortunately) being in such an image driven industry paired with the fact that this is her 4th studio album, one can’t be blamed for anticipating a better overall output from Cole.
Cole’s ‘Calling All Hearts’ album hits stores on December 21st.

It was ironic that the Tonight Show Band playing behind her is the American Idol band as well! I’m sure the judges would have mentioned her rough, pitchy start…lol. However, she’s grown on me & I hope this new album will be as good as “A Different Me”.

I’m not a Keyshia fan, but there’s something about her that makes me want to see her do well. I do like this song though and i’m glad she seems to have a hit on her hands. She did a great job doing this one live, despite the shaky start. 🙂
This Winter is Officially FLOP Season and I’m glad to see that All of these Un-Talented Female R&B singers are starting to FLOP i.e Keyshia Cole, Ciara, and Keri Hilson just like Ashanti faded away. I see these ladies Hopefully Fading away as well. Hope Ms. Cole has been saving her Reality TV and Album $$$. LOL
She has a tendency to be off pitch in the first half of the song, doesn’t mean she can’t sing, she just needs to stay in melody sometimes. She sounded great at the Soul Train Awards though. Still luv the song though, and I REALLY like her new look.

I donno what u all are talkin about. She sounds amazing compared to her singing on her 1st 2 albums when she was always straining. She definitely won me over with this performance can’t wait for the album.

I agree with @RoyalKev, I do want Keyshia to succeed as a person and an artist, but with a performance like this, there really isn’t much of a progression as an entertainer. She lacks stage presence, though she doesn’t have that bubbly personality that she can feed to the masses, she does have that urban appeal with can relate to her target audience (I can’t see too many White people rocking with KC as I do minorities). Keyshia does have a voice, but there still is a lot of pain in tender places; she tries to do too much with it, whereas blaring out notes on the majority of songs (maybe it’s a subliminal form to relief her of her troubles…). And it’s also very, very, very rare to hear the singer use falsetto, a way to soothe out her grit, rather than resorting to dropping the vibrato and howling, almost close to a break. I hope she can get it together…
@KAHARI, I’m not sure where you get your race based information on artist preference, but I am white and I have loved Keyshia from the start. So much so, that I bought two copies of her first album the day it dropped. It might be because I live in a State (MN) that is predominantly Caucasian, but I certainly don’t see a color line on Keyshia’s music. Sometimes the venue she performs at in MN affects the crowd mixture, but that happens with any artist.
On last point, when is the last time you heard Rihanna or Mary J Blige use a falsetto? Not often, because that doesn’t sell to the mainstream. The only true falsetto I can remember breaking through to mainstream in recent years is Robin Thicke (no, sorry The Dream Falsetto doesn’t count). However, I understand where you are coming from; many of us miss the R&B falsetto’s of the 90’s with the likes of Maxwell , Jesse Powell, or even 112.
