In today’s climate, more and more names are falling foul of public favor – often for wrongs uncovered from times of past.
It’s resulted in a heated and ever-raging debate about the fairness of penalizing people retroactively.
J. Cole has expressed his two cents in on the matter in a new interview with XXL.
Check out his words below…
The rapper, who has publicly supported the likes of Tekashi 6ix9ine and XXXTentacion, told the magazine:
“I understand outrage. So I don’t know. If anything, it kind of makes me want to be even more empathetic to people that the world considers to be undesirable. Because we live in a world where everybody wants to be so quick to cancel somebody. But at the same time, people condemn the criminal justice system, which is entirely the cancellation system. To me, both of those ideas are f*cked up, like, ‘We’re throwing you away.’ […] You’re looking to punish me—and don’t get it twisted, what I did was a punishable offense—but where are you talking about healing me? Where are you going to show me some compassion and some f*cking love?”
He want on to add:
“I’m down for accountability culture. I’m cool with that. Even for myself,” he said. “Everyone needs to be accountable. I don’t mind if someone got something to say about me or what I said or did. That’s all good. But cancel culture? I don’t cancel nobody.”
[My tweet supporting certain people] was just me realizing that and letting it be known, I’m deadass serious, hit my phone. I’ve done that with people where they just spill they f*cking hearts out. I’ll listen and ask the right questions and give any guidance where I can. It’s just understanding, bro. People in the game, people in general, we don’t do that for each other.”
Are you feeling Jermaine’s more emphatic approach?
He’s not entirely wrong but it’s ‘funny’ how it’s always the women abusers that get this ’empathy’ huh… live by your own words bruh hug a racist today *eye roll*
I agree. It starts to get too tricky trying folks in court of public opinion. For instance is cardi b cancelled now.
People get cancelled for stupid stuff sometimes (the hate Demi Lovato got for example was too much), BUT, I don’t know what these celebrities expect. “Cancelling” somebody simply means to stop supporting them, and that’s everybody’s right as consumers. You as a celeb have the right to say and do whatever you want. But, so does everybody else, and if they don’t wanna support you anymore for something you said or did that doesn’t align with their values, that’s their business. ??♀️ It’s not their job to rehabilitate you or “show you love” in spite of your attitude towards them. Like Daniel Caesar and his “fvck you” attitude. And It’s not their job to be empathetic to sexual abusers and racists. You can’t go around blatantly offending people and then require compassion and understanding from them in return. They don’t owe you anything.
^^ This. I will decide who is worthy of my empathy and compassion. It might be a friend, family, someone I don’t know in the street or a celebrity. But don’t tell me how I should spend my compassion and empathy – he has no idea where we spend it elsewhere.

First of all Kulture’s name is spelled with a K. Second, we all know the Barbs are behind this “dig up dirt to tear Cardi B down”. Nick Enables this madness because she is embarrassed and jealous. However, Cardi needs to stop explaining everything to social media because she is going to ruin HERSELF!
First of all Cadri did herself in when she filed a lawsuit aganist Star Marie and the Youtube vlogger TashaK. Secondly if Gay Cole aka J. Cole would have said that bs about drugging and robbing men his ass would have been “cancelled” and proberly in jail. #doublestandards
Perhaps the barbs did dig up this old video, but she never should’ve created it to begin with. And if she really did commit those crimes, she needs to go to prison like anyone else. Celebs should not be above the law.
I think people are too interested in these celebs personal lives. There is nothing wrong with individuals ‘cancelling’ an artist but the problem is when they attack other people for not canceling the artist as well.
In this situation compassion is about wanting someone to get help and not withholding that help if you are in the position to give it to the person who desires to change. Accountability requires a person to admit there is a problem and take steps and ask for help to correct it. When a celebrity uses his/her platform to further the kind of lifestyle and attitude that enables them to ignore the trouble and harm that they perpetuate, why should society continue to invest in said platform? Cancel culture simply says, ‘Stop enabling this person.’
‘CANCELLING’ = ‘CENSORSHIP’. People need to leave music alone. If you don’t want to support an artist then don’t support them but when you try to ‘cancel’ them you are trying censor the artist and their listeners (aka force-feeding your opinions on others and censoring them).
J cole protects Cardi like he fu.cking her
he has a few points https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_RG1O5BhBU
Kanye is still cancelled
Cardi is the definition of ratchet unrefined Hoodrat. What exactly do people expect? She is who she is and I’m sure she has done some crazy s*** in her past but that’s part of the world she grew up in. As far as I’m concerned you make weirdos famous expect weird s***!!
Nicely said. I agree.
100% correct. compassion, forgiveness, loyalty, and so many another things are missing with this generation. nobody is perfect. but there is no reason to hate someone bad enough that they shouldn’t be able to make a living and provide for their family.
