Michael B. Jordan continues to prove himself one of Hollywood’s most versatile talents.
The star top-lines Warner Bros‘ gripping drama ‘Just Mercy’ – which has delivered solid results during its limited holiday debut.
Powerful, pensive, and thought-provoking, the true story tells the tale of attorney Bryan Stevenson (Jordan) and his groundbreaking battle for justice.
A Harvard graduate, Stevenson had a buffet table of job opportunities awaiting his picking. However, he instead heads to Alabama to help the falsely accused pursue their vindication.
During his quest, he encounters Walter McMillian (played by Foxx), who had been sentenced to death for the murder of a teen girl. This despite the existence of ample evidence in support of his innocence.
Together they strive to overturn the judgement.
Find out how it performed following its Christmas Day premiere below…
Opening in four theaters in New York and Los Angeles on Christmas Day, Deadline reports that ‘Mercy’ amassed a five-day weekend gross of $218,000.
An impressive figure for a limited opening and one which bodes well for its commercial potential ahead of a wider release on January 10th.
Also adding to its momentum is its critical acclaim, which includes an 81% rating on Rotten Tomatoes (where it holds a 98% audience score) as well as an A+ CinemaScore.
The film has earned Foxx a SAG Award nomination, and the National Board of Review honored it with the Freedom of Expression honor.
Notably, the film also made history as the first major studio offering to implement the inclusion rider, which makes it stipulates women, people of color, LGBTQ people and other under-represented groups are considered for key on-screen and behind-the-scenes roles.
Roll on January.
The trailer looks great! Had I heard about this movie last week, I too, would have been one of the many people to see it on Christmas. I may still go and see this. Wishing them much success!
I am so incredibly PROUD of this work! I saw it at an industry Pre screening. I can promise that MBJ & Jamie Foxx will both be securing Oscar nominations. The project is phenomenal!!
