Just hours after the death of Bill Withers was announced Friday (April 3), fans of the legendary singer have turned to digital download and streaming platforms for consolation.
Albeit a common response to reports of the passing of a beloved musician, Withers’ catalog – unlike some – is seeing multiple entries dominate real-time iTunes charts with hits that are older than most of the acts he’s unseating.
Besting the likes of Drake, The Weeknd, Dua Lipa, and a host of other current hitmakers, look inside for more:
As of time reported, Withers occupies three of the top 5 positions alone. With his signature hit, ‘Lean On Me,’ taking the top spot, the song – which peaked at #1 on the Pop charts in 1972 – could re-enter the Hot 100 once the current sales tracking week ends when all other elements are considered (i.e. increased streams, increased radio airplay due to tributes, etc.).
He was a fantastic singer. May he rest in peace
