Federal prosecutors have shared more details about R. Kelly‘s marriage to Aaliyah.
The troubled singer appeared in court on August 18 for the beginning of his racketeering trial, where new insights were shed on his illegal marriage to the icon.
More details below….
According to The New York Times, Attorney Maria Cruz Melendez addressed Kelly’s alleged union with Aaliyah in 1994, when he was 27 and she was 15.
In her claims, she alleged that Kelly had learned that Aaliyah had become pregnant and that he was the father of the unborn child. As a result, he then married her to avoid having her testifying against him.
“This was, of course, a huge problem for him. If she was pregnant that meant there would be questions: At the very top of that list of questions — who is the father of that baby?”
Kelly then allegedly bribed a Chicago official to provide a fake ID for Aaliyah. However, the marriage went on to be annulled a year later.
Melendez claims that Kelly used his wealth and power to “exploit young girls, boys and women for his own sexual gratification.”
He is facing several charges, including: forced labor, kidnapping, sex trafficking, and multiple violations of the Mann Act.
The trial centers on allegations from six different women, who say they endured physical and emotional abuse by Kelly. If convicted, he will face 10 years to life behind bars.

He is a typical nasty black devil and should get the chair.
Predatory, disgusting devil 💯
He’s a sick man. He shoulda got Shayla in his studio though.
Y’all love to keep my name in yo mouths 💋
Unfortunately, Aaliyah is now in the company of Michael and Whitney when it comes to ongoing rumor, scandal and speculation. 20 years after her passing the family is at odds over music rights, her name is being dragged through the mud over something she wished to keep private, and dumb accusations are being made about the day of the accident.
The prosecution has plenty of opportunity to prove their case without using Aaliyah. She’s not here to testify, so what are they really doing but adding to the hurt that her family continues to feel? I am so upset for them. I have played her music a lot through the years and I can’t even enjoy it right now with all this stuff going on. I pray that her mother and brother will have the peace, help and strength to get through it.
Smh…I hate this for Aaliyah but you know what it’s about time the truth is coming out..that way once this is all over she can truely Rest. I must say though I was watching Aaliyah’s At Your Best remix video and some of the girls that was in the SRK documentary is in that video as well (you just have to look but at least 3 of them is in that video) anyway out of all those girls who had dealing w R Kelly whether they are telling the truth or not I must say Aaliyah looked better than ALL OF THEM COMBINED and she was the most successful out of all of them. I have to give R Kelly his props tho before this he NEVER mentioned Aaliyah and if he did he kept it brief “and cute” and same for Aaliyah when she was here; she NEVER slandered him and if he was mentioned she like him kept it brief “and cute”. I’m sure they both hated all that happened tho..but it happened so now everything is what it is. I’ma still love Aaliyah regardless… period. For the next 5 days starting tomorrow I will wear a shirt w her picture on it (I have alot of them).
RIP Aaliyah I am sooooo sorry ALL OF THIS happened to you
“I have to give R Kelly his props tho before this he NEVER mentioned Aaliyah and if he did he kept it brief “and cute” and same for Aaliyah when she was here; she NEVER slandered him and if he was mentioned she like him kept it brief “and cute”. ” I used to believe it was out of mutual respect, but after watching the documentary, I think it’s more likely they were following a legally binding agreement.
I’m confused to Aaliyah is being brought up in the first place. When the initial scandal happened, no one thought to press charges even though it was public knowledge (Her family) And then even through her growth she (Aaliyah) didn’t pursue anything against him.
Do we even know if this pregnancy revaluation is true?
The timing is also awful. It’s her 20th year anniversary and the soon to be released music to streaming services.
Maybe it’s considered an publicity is good publicity.
I don’t think so.
