Tevin Campbell Agrees Usher is the “King of R&B,” But Believes We Shouldn’t Forget R. Kelly

Published: Wednesday 7th Sep 2022 by Rashad

Embattled R&B legend R. Kelly – already serving a 30-year sentence for sex trafficking and racketeering – may be facing the possibility of spending the rest of his life behind bars due to an ongoing trial for sex crimes against minors, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t deserve a throne.  At least, that’s what veteran singer Tevin Campbell is suggesting.

The ‘Can We Talk’ crooner talked with TMZ recently and gave his two cents on the ongoing debate about who the real King of R&B is – a debate that was incited when Usher took to press recently to announce he felt he deserved the title.

Hop inside to hear what Tevin had to say and let us know if you agree.

Ironically fresh from thrilling fans in Vegas with a duet of ‘Talk’ with Usher (as we reported here), the 45-year-old – whose career in the genre is over three decades long – waxed honest about his thoughts on who is R&B’s reigning monarch.

Though initially taking the more diplomatic route by saying ‘everyone is a king’ and paying tribute to the legends who paved the way (i.e. Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway, Sam Cooke, etc.), Campbell eventually explained his thoughts on who is currently owning the throne.  His thoughts were particularly timely as Usher recently said no one could challenge him in a VERZUZ battle.

“You know there is R. Kelly,” Tevin relayed when discussing who is worthy to face off with Usher in a hit-for-hit showdown. “I’m not saying just anybody can compete, but R. Kelly has a lot of hits and he wrote all of them.”

I think he made some valid points, lots of kings of R&B but can’t forget about the pioneers like Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, etc. And before Usher there was Bobby Brown and Keith Sweat.

Facts! R.Kelly’s legacy in music is solidified. White people revere elvis as their king regardless of his issues, R.Kelly is a musical genius.

      • Real talk September 7, 2022

White people also kill their spouses for insurance money and dump their bodies into the river. They also be raping their kids. That’s the standard you wanna live by? Such a goofy. R kelly’s music is about having s** with underaged girls, stop celebrating weirdos.

Black people also kill their spouses for fun and have 𝕤𝕖𝕩 with their dead bodies. They also sell their kids to 𝕤𝕖𝕩 trading gangs. R kelly’s music is about having 𝕤𝕖𝕩 with underaged black girls and boys, which I don’t give two 𝕤𝕙𝕚𝕥𝕤 about.

This dude been sly way hating on and dissing Usher for years. Just look at his face when the guy called Usher the King of R&B. Even after Usher gave his washed up assss an olive branch and let him sing his only lil top 10 hit at his Vegas residency.

      STFU yesterday

      • Nikki September 7, 2022

R Kelly always have and will be. Elvis married a damn 14 year old and white America still praise him. So no Kelly greatness will not be ignored. We love Usher but he don’t and never will have s*** on R Kelly talent. Free or not nobody is messing with him period. Btw this article misleading. Tevin didn’t agree with Usher being the king. He says they’re all kings.

      • Tino September 7, 2022

        @Wayno you STFU bitttccchhh

    • Tino September 7, 2022

@Nikki meanwhile Usher has sold more albums and have more number one songs on every chart.

I agree w Usher being the king 🤷 R Kelly got 30 years he is out of there, might as well stop bringing him up when it comes to these type of conversations.

I think he was fair in the way he recognized that a number of legends were r&b kings in their respective time.

  5. Anne September 7, 2022

I think the headline is misleading. He didn’t say or agree that Usher is the one king of R&B.

    • BIGTEN September 7, 2022

      THERE IS ONLY ONE KING.

      LONG LIVE KING R. KELLY.

  6. MIKE September 7, 2022

  7. Brian September 7, 2022

Usher naming R Kelly as “King Of R & B” is like nominating O.J. Simpson for NFL MVP or Bill Cosby as Entertainer of The Year for 2022.

  8. BIGTEN September 7, 2022

R KELLY WILL ALWAYS BE KING.

    LONG LIVE KING R. KELLY

    • Tino September 7, 2022

STFU and go sacrifice your teenage daughter to him.
