The legendary life and times of R&B’s premier balladeer Luther Vandross is about to be seen in lights like never before thanks to Academy & GRAMMY Award-winner Jamie Foxx as well as award-winning writer/director Patrik-Ian Polk.

With renown filmmaker Dawn Porter tapped to direct, Sony Music Publishing and Foxx’s Foxxhole Productions are teaming with Colin Firth’s Raindog Films to produce a full-length documentary about the late R&B superstar (who died in 2005 at age 54).
One of music history’s most celebrated male vocalists, Vandross – known for unforgettable hits like ‘Here and Now,’ ‘Never Too Much,’ ‘A House is Not a Home,’ ‘Endless Love,’ and ‘Superstar’ – sold over 40 million records worldwide and collected 8 GRAMMYs over his career.
The Foxx-produced documentary will feature interviews from some of Luther’s closest family members and friends and is said to “follow the iconic artist as he charted his own course becoming one of the most decorated and influential pop artists of all time” and “capture the intensely private Grammy-winning artist’s passion for music, global rise and personal struggles.”
“Luther is one of our GOATs,” Foxx said in an official statement. “He’s one of the greatest singers in the history of music. It is truly an honor to be a part of the team to help bring this incredible story to the masses.”
News of the Luther doc comes just weeks after Polk revealed plans to unveil a Vandross biopic based on Craig Seymour’s book, ‘Luther: The Life and Longing of Luther Vandross.’
At writing, neither project has a tentative release date attached.
Why should he get to tell the story of an “intensely private” man when he can’t even reveal what’s going on with himself? He wants people to mind their own business but goes digging into someone else’s life to tell not just about their music but their personal struggles as well.
