Kehlani is shutting down the chatter after Aaliyah‘s fanbase stirred controversy over her new video, ‘Out The Window.’
Full story below…
Shortly after the visual dropped, many praised the singer for what appeared to be a subtle homage to Aaliyah’s iconic ‘Try Again’ clip.
Even the late legend’s official X account showed love, calling out the clear influence with a warm nod.
But not everyone was impressed.
Some resurfaced a 2017 interview where a 19-year-old Kehlani admitted she didn’t grow up on Aaliyah’s music, and suddenly, accusations of disrespect started flying.
Taking to Instagram, Kehlani clarified that the reference was intentional and rooted in admiration. She explained she discovered Aaliyah later in her teens and has since honored her in music, she said:
“I didn’t grow up as a child to her music, my mom didn’t play me her music, but I did catch on when I was a teenager and that was when I fell in love. So that is why that was my answer from an interview from over 10 years ago. Why would I shade this woman? I love this woman, I’ve referenced this woman multiple times.”
Suffice it to say, Kehlnai reaffirmed her deep respect for Babygirl and her legacy. Hear her full address of the situation below.

Gosh, I wish people would leave Aaliyah alone. From the awful posthumous music, to the borederline idol workship/shrining of her, poor gal deserves to rest in peace.
It’s not idol worshipping
Her uncle does worship her like an idol. Drake had a creepy obsession with her and so did R Kelly.
Leave the poor soul alone to rest in peace. She was exploited in life and she’s exploited in death too.
There’s are people, you know who they are, they’ve been out to get Kehlani to derail her career. Ever since she spoke out. Folded proved those people couldn’t stop her. But they’ll keep trying. More power to Kehlani. Authenticity will prevail
We don’t need white women to carry in torch for Aaliyah anyway.
What white women? This is Kehlani.
We don’t give a f about this mslmNzi Hohoho
