Much like Chloe Bailey, Lauryn Hill, and Erykah Badu, singer-reality star Aubrey O’Day found herself in a firestorm of controversy for attending Kanye West‘s recent blockbuster concerts in Los Angeles.
And while the other ladies have opted to keep mum on the backlash they’ve received for being in attendance, the outspoken Danity Kane diva is tackling it head-on.
Taking to X (formerly known as Twitter) on Tuesday (April 7), O’Day clapped back at multiple fans who criticized her for attending not one, but two of West’s shows following years of blowback for his controversial racist, antiSemitic, fatphobic, transphobic, and homophobic commentary.
“Aubrey, I’m a little confused with the supporting of Kanye West. He’s done some really reprehensible things very recently, and you seem like a woman of [principle] when it comes to stuff like that,” read one comment on her Instagram, appearing to reference O’Day’s ongoing beef with former boss Sean “Diddy” Combs.
The statement above was just one of many flooding the 42-year-old’s social media handles, prompting her to finally break her silence.
“Your statement assumes my intent is to endorse harm (it isn’t). My single action meaningfully determines “consequences” (it doesn’t). There’s no distinction between engaging with art and endorsing behavior (there is). You are turning a complex ethical choice into a moral accusation about my character. If your standard was applied consistently, you’d have to stop consuming a huge percentage of music, fashion, film, etc. If we’re going to reduce art to the morality of every person behind it, we’d have to start auditing entire industries, not just individual artists. Most people don’t actually live that way-they just apply it selectively when it’s convenient to criticize someone. A lot of $ in the Epstein files funded a lot of shit that you like,” she told one critic on X.
She didn’t stop there.
“I can hold two truths at once. I’ve been vocal about abuse because I’ve lived it, and I don’t excuse it, ever. That hasn’t changed. But I also don’t believe engaging with someone’s art means I co-sign every opinion or action they’ve ever had,” she said before sharing, “If that were the rule, most of this industry-and honestly most of the world-would be off limits. What I don’t support is harm, exploitation, or violence. And I’ve been consistent about that…You can disagree with where I draw my line, but calling it hypocrisy ignores the nuance.”
West has easily been the week’s hottest topic amid ongoing chatter around the cancellation of this year’s Wireless Festival in the UK where he was set to serve as headliner before being banned from entering the country due to his problematic past.
He’s since apologized for his antiSemitic history and even offered to meet with British Jewish community leaders to discuss opportunities for redemption.
