In breaking news, Derek Chauvin has been found GUILTY of murdering George Floyd.
Full story below…
Moments ago, after 10 hours of deliberation, a jury deemed the former Minneapolis officer culpable for Floyd’s death on May 25 2020, after he knelt on his neck for over 9 minutes.
Chauvin was found guilty on all three charges, which were: 2nd-degree murder, 3rd-degree murder, and 2nd-degree manslaughter.
Sentencing is expected in eight weeks time. The maximum sentence for the most serious of the charges (2nd-degree murder), is 40 years.
Much like the shocking viral video that chronicled Floyd’s death, the trial was watched by the world. It saw the prosecution put forth 38 prosecution witnesses, who all critiqued Chauvin – including medical experts and the Minneapolis Police Chief (which is considered unprecedented).
Floyd’s murder was a major catalyst for last year’s Black Lives Matter protests and sparked global dialogue about racial injustice.
Almost a year on, justice has been served.
