Major! Maya Angelou Becomes First Black Woman to Appear on US Quarter Coin

Maya Angelou left an indelible mark on the world and her legacy is now being immortalized anew in a way that sees her make history all over again.

For, the activist, author, and poet has become the first Black woman ever featured on the US 25-cent (quarter) coin.

The US Treasury trumpeted the news today and also provided the first look at the freshly minted coin:

Janet Yellen, the US’ first female treasury secretary, celebrated the honor in a statement. She said:

“Each time we redesign our currency, we have the chance to say something about our country – what we value, and how we’ve progressed as a society.”

In life, Angelou used her potent platform to advocate for both racial and gender equality. She died in 2014 aged 86 but possesses a legacy that will live on forever.
