Former policewoman Kim Potter, who was convicted in December of first and second-degree manslaughter for the shooting death of a Black Minnesota man Daunte Wright, has been sentenced to two years in prison for the offense.

According to reports, Potter is only required to serve two-thirds of the 2-year sentence (or 16 months) in prison and – with good behavior – could be eligible for supervised release for the remainder.

What’s more, Kim must pay a fine of $1,000 and a surcharge.  It’s of particular note that Potter has the right to appeal the conviction and sentence.

The judge who handed down the decision, Hennepin County, Minnesota judge Regina Chu, got choked up while reading the 2-year sentence – ultimately denying the Wright family’s request to hand down the maximum punishment.

“She never intended to hurt anyone. Her conduct cries out for a sentence significantly below the guidelines,” Chu said.

As we reported here at the time of the trial, Potter said she mistakenly drew her gun instead of her taser when she fatally shot Wright, a 20-year-old Black man, during an April 2021 traffic stop.
