The “Mistress of All Evil” seems to be scaring away all of the competition if reports are to believed.
That Grape Juice originally reported that the Angelina Jolie-led live action take on the story of ‘Sleeping Beauty’ villain ‘Maleficent’ was set to rule the box office with a whopping $60 million generated over its debut weekend.
The prediction, based solely on the movie’s premiere day performance, has now been adjusted upward as fans surge to theaters to see Jolie’s first film in four years. Now, as the family flick continues to work its magic on moviegoers, reports have surfaced that the Academy Award-winner has been tapped to portray ancient Egyptian queen Cleopatra in a forthcoming film.
Angelina Jolie‘s live-action fairy tale Maleficent is whipping up a powerful potion at the Friday box office, where it could approach $25 million for the day for a weekend debut in the $65 million-plus range. Disney considers anything over $60 million a victory. Some believe Maleficent could even hit $70 million in its debut, since it is pacing on par with Oz the Great and Powerful, which debuted to roughly $79 million in March 2013.
The reports accompany news that Jolie confirmed her decision to pursue the creation of a new biopic based on the ‘Queen of the Nile’ Cleopatra.

I am a Classics student, so suffice to say I know a little bit about Ancient Egypt. I’m no expert in Egyptian history/culture, since I primarily study Rome and Greece. However, that is enough to know that Cleopatra (she was Cleopatra VII, by the way) was not of African descent. Just because someone lives in Africa, it does not mean that he/she is African. She was of the Ptolemaic line of pharoahs, descended from the Greek general Ptolemy. When Alexander the Great died, the territory he conquered (Egypt included) was divided among his three top generals, Ptolemy being one of the three. Since the Ancient Greeks were xenophobic, they did not want to mix with the native Africans; they inbred. Cleopatra’s husbands/co-rulers, first Ptolemy XIII and then Ptolemy XIV, were both her brothers. That was the tradition. Of course, she probably had some genetic malformations as a result, but such is life. Having a black woman play the part would be historically incorrect. Cleo was as white as they came, so Angelina is a fine match.
Also, but perhaps less relevant, she was not by current standards physically beautiful. From her image on coins of the time, historians have a good idea of what she looked like: big nosed. It was her charisma, power, and intelligence that attracted both Caesar and Marc Antony. But, this is Hollywood and if an unattractive actress had the lead role, no one would want to see it 😛
