Whitney Biopic: Snippet Of ‘I Will Always Love You’ (Performed By Deborah Cox) Surfaces

Much ado has been made about Lifetime‘s upcoming Whitney Houston biopic.

From song clearances, to starring actors, to its very existence; the Angela Bassett production hasn’t been short on controversy.

The latest round of debate ignited this week when it was announced that Deborah Cox will be voicing ‘The Voice’ in the made-for-TV movie. Legalities surrounding copyright means it won’t be possible to use Houston’s hits in their original form. Hence, Cox – a powerhouse in her own right – is providing “vocal tracks” for lead Yaya DaCosta to “perform” to.

Naturally, the news has many eager to hear whether Cox can do justice to Whitney’s iconic catalogue. And it seems folk won’t have to wait too long to find out.

TMZ have premiered a clip of the re-sung rendition of the late diva’s signature hit ‘I Will Always Love You’ – which was recorded on set in Los Angeles this week.

Listen below and, as ever, let us know what you think!

Bravo!

As we anticipated, Cox was a smart pick – something we’re sure folk will agree with in time. What’s more, there’s a certain “damed if they do, damned if they don’t” situation at hand. For, had Whitney’s voice been featured, there inevitably would have been a sect of the audience that would have taken issue with that too. As such, we say, ride on and make the best movie make-able.

Presently titled ‘Whitney’, the telepic is set to debut in 2015.

I’m tired of these low budget tv biopics. Whitney doesn’t need one anyway. Not this soon at least.

I’ll never understand how James”smack a b**** down” Brown got an actual motion picture production before Whitney Houston! Especially since majority of his audience is dead!..Anyway Deborah C** sounds great like usual.

They been working on Brown since the day he passed or maybe any before it. So they can stop.

Lifetime just looks so desperate n trying to make these biopics

Good but not as good as Whitney’s.

As far as I know, this isn’t a musical. It’s a movie about the life of a singer, so I welcome Deborah’s voice replacing Whitney’s. Whitney Houston has an entire discography that people can listen to whenever they want. And when it comes to Whitney “deserving” a better platform, well… The filming of a movie does not end the possibility for the creation of others. The history of her life can be told in many, many ways… So I hope that people simply relax and enjoy the show or completely ignore it if that’s their choice.

I love Deborah and honestly can’t think of a better singer to provide vocals for Whitney’s songs… In the snippet above she sang like Whitney (reproducing runs and hitting the notes) while showcasing that impressive instrument – filled with true emotion.

Those who love music and respect the ability to sing will recognize Deborah’s greatness.

Oh, and please: try to appreciate things for what they are without the need to compare (even though I have compared myself)…

Just NO!!! No to all of this.

THANK YOU!!!!..Lifetime is really looking so thirsty these days tryna make biopics to the point that they can’t even get the clearance for these stars voices or approval from the family’s…If no one wants to back this film that were close to these individuals how are they gonna portray their lives accurately?

  8. Kisses Down Low July 19, 2014

The movie should have Whitneys vocals and be on the big screen.

  9. Jaguare July 19, 2014

not bad. I need to listen to the whole thing tho.

I don’t understand why people think it’s too soon. How long does someone have to dead before they are honored. Tina Turner has a movie. Last time I checked she was still living. Get over it. It’s about telling her story and paying homage.

  12. Anne July 19, 2014

Wow! Not Whitney but damn close! They definitely could not have made a better choice.

There is a South African woman by the name of Belinda Davids who comes close to Whitney. She is currently doing a show called The Greatest Love of All – The Whitney Houston Show https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VlgpSFtKmzg

The fact that Angela Basset is still considering to produce this bioptic is awful. Rather its to soon or not. The family isn’t letting her use Whitney vocals. That speaks volumes alone. Have some respect for the family. Just because Angela is accomplished doesn’t means she should get away with this. Its awful. I love Deborah C** but cmon now. have some respect.
