‘Empire’ Star Jussie Smollett Comes Out As Gay On ‘Ellen’

Published: Monday 9th Mar 2015 by Sam

There’s never been a closet”

Those were the words of popular ‘Empire’ star Jussie Smollett while chatting with talk show maven Ellen today.

Guesting on show to promote the FOX smash, the 31-year-old – who plays rising gay singer Jamal on the Lee Daniels drama – initially avoided the topic of his real-life sexuality. Instead, he requested to sit down with the host in a more intimate setting backstage to open up about his truth.

Watch the interviews below…

“It was really important to me to make sure that it got across that there is no closet,”  There’s never been a closet. That I’ve been in. I don’t own a closet, I got a dresser, but I don’t have a closet, but I have a home and that is my responsibility to protect that home.

So that’s why I choose not to talk bout my personal life. But there is without a doubt, no closet that I’ve ever been in, and I just wanted to make that clear, but it was most important for me to make that clear to you on your show at this time in the world. And that’s where I’m at. So lets not read into it the wrong when I say that I don’t talk about my personal life, I’m saying that. But it is in no way to hide or deny who god made me. Ya know?”

My mama knows. My Mama likes me a lot. And yes I take her to the Sound of Music sing-along every, single year. So, any questions? But you know honestly, we’re humans and we love and we do all that good stuff. So I’m honored for this opportunity and I’m honored to be here with you”.

Check out his sit-down on the main-show below…
More power to him!
The announcement comes on the heels of Smollett’s confirmation that he’s signed a deal with Columbia Records – label home of Beyonce, Adele, and John Legend.

Did he really need to come out though? I been it was already implied he was gay before the show even came on.

      Noooooo, really? (Sarcasm)

      • Skyfall March 9, 2015

Your Life is sarcasm, If I were you I’d be looking for my real birth certificate.

Let this be his truth, BLACK PEOPLE are so close minded and hateful, why not support him or just shut up?

      • AnnaMaeKeatingsNewWig March 9, 2015

You can’t generalise a race, maybe a culture… but not all of Black People.

    • Lana Del Fan *I Can Hear The Sirens* March 9, 2015

Why does coming out have to be an event…. Its just a call for attention and for the spotlight. Everything doesnt need to be “ANNOUNCED”, especially in his case, because for one, The only people who didnt already know he was gay, was the delusional female fans of the show that wanted his D like it usually always is.
Sometimes gays just be doing thee MOST!

My bad.. when I started posting there were no posts there. Our posts are similar in certain ways.

    • Brian310 March 9, 2015

I don’t get that either, look at Queen Latifah and Missy they don’t have this big coming out event because there is no need to when you are just living your life.

    • Terri March 9, 2015

      You sound like a hood rat with limited education;

  3. igotstatellithowiseeit March 9, 2015

Why do we care? Why must it be such a spectacle? It is like they want a badge of honor or a medal for choosing to live life how they want. They get excited when someone crosses over or comes out… they’re like, “YES! One more in the club”… or that is how they make it seem. Live life, do you!

  4. ENOUGH ONIKA March 9, 2015

Wow….like no one knew he was a queen…..

    • Terri March 9, 2015

      But we do know your a hoodrat with sexuality issues;

  5. MISHKA March 9, 2015

He said he was never in a closet though.

But I guess the “coming out” comes in handy. The ladies had started fangirling on dude since those “up down up down shake it faaast” moves.

It definitely wasn’t a secret….Seen the movie “The Skinny”?

  7. TheElusiveLamb March 9, 2015

I think the more surprising thing is that he’s 31.

It’s annoying that in America they make coming out such a HUGE Factor, at this point sexuality should not matter, saying that though, I Love Jussie Smallet, I love him and i can’t wait for his album, him on Frank Ocean on a duet! lol

  11. No favs, just here for the music March 9, 2015

I applaud him for confirming this. It’s never easy admitting one’s sexuality, especially with all the homophobia in the world. You’re a wonderful human being, and who you choose to have in your bed should never matter.

  12. Yaaahs March 9, 2015

I need him inside me soon. Have you seen his nudes? Yes lordt. Ok let me stop. Congrats on coming out.

  13. Mark111 March 9, 2015

Most of y’all are gay, bi or straight, yet accept the lifestyle . But you have to remember, just because YOU’RE ok being gay or ok with the lifestyle and is comfortable with it, doesn’t mean most of the world is. You gotta think of the ones that don’t know how to come out, the ones that are bullied, hurt or killed or killing themselves because they feel alone. So maybe seeing this on tv MORE, will help THEM. And maybe to change the thoughts of the ones that hate it, with more of this in the media will anger some, but in time will teach them or the very least the next generation.

  14. Bella3 March 9, 2015

I will always love him! Lol ❤

  15. pat March 9, 2015

he was damn if he did …damn if he didnt…yall f*** will never be satisfied

  16. Tyler March 9, 2015

I Always Knew He Was A Queen.

  17. justmeeeee March 9, 2015

I have never ever watched the show Empire and never will but based off what I’ve heard as far as the scenes that he has done there was no need to make an announcement it is very clear

just because you live that way does not make it normal

    • Terri March 9, 2015

Ur still in the 1960’s, your a sad excuse for a human being; People like you should be sent to hell along with hatin ass white men

  18. Blue Ivy Rod (fourfivesecondsofSeethin) March 9, 2015

Coming out stories is great, makes more people and more kids more willing to understand, be more accepting and not let anyone tell them how to judge or that their sexuality is wrong

  19. Terri March 9, 2015

I sit back and read the nonsense you write in the comment section and now I know what BLACK on Black crime is so bad, why only rap shows have random gun shots, why the black community forces gay men to live in secret; SELF HATE, gay men run around on these sites hating every female that sings (YES SAM HATES WOMEN) beyonce, Rihanna and mariah are torn down constantly. SELF HATE; The black community is in shambles while your apes run around turning each other down. Like ANIMALS

    • justmeeeee March 9, 2015

in other words since we don’t agree with two men being together or two women being together then we have the problem???

by the way since you want to bring up the word animals I have a question for you…Why do animals mate male with female?

live however you want but don’t be upset because what is abnormal it’s not going to be considered normal.
Gays are always trying to force their views on others
      that is wrong!!!

I’ll leave you with a point to ponder…
if everyone decided to be gay then the entire race of human beings would die out !!!

I am NOT bashing I am just simply stating a fact
I have love for all people but that behavior is not normal
my heart goes out to those people with that situation and I don’t feel that it is a reason to disrespect them or put them down or call them names, I never have.

people of all races around the world share the same view

it amazes me how good he’s always try to use the civil rights era in defense of their fight but are so quick to Lash out and come against black people

I will keep you in prayer

      • justmeeeee March 9, 2015

^^^it amazes me how Gays always try to use the civil rights era

#LGBT is closed minded BUT accuse everybody else of it
