‘Underground’ Creator Confirms Show Has Been Cancelled…Forever

Published: Monday 6th Nov 2017 by David

Underground‘, the groundbreaking series forged to offer a brutally honest look into the enslaving of African human beings in America, is over.

A heartfelt message from its creator below…

The series was pulled from WGN after the platform opted to steer away from scripted content forcing its producers to search for a new home.

Alas, none of the networks they met with it to secure a deal were willing to pick it up…citing its production costs as their cause for concern.

With heavy heart Misha Green shared this message…

We hope the coming year will see things turn around for the series for it truly was a brilliant addition to TV’s line-up.

underground is without question one of the BEST tv shows i have ever seen in my damn life. i was DISGUSTED when the show was cancelled due to restructuring and its price tag knowing damn well they could have just cut it down.

other networks not willing to take it on says a lot too. it’s all about crap these days. quality does not matter

Period pieces are expensive. How many period shows are on air right now regardless of color? The other problem is low ratings. Black people are not loyal to shows like this. Many are too assimilated so they refuse to identify or watch their own history. #Facts.

Why don’t they try Netflix or any other online streaming

Netflix cancelled their last black period piece due to lack of viewership. People are looking the lack of support in terms of ratings for shows like this. Amazon would reformat the show to a half hour and even though it does not fit in with their low budget shows. How do you reduce the budget of a period piece without totally changing the concept of the show?

Where there’s a will, there’s a way. After Oprah declined to pick up the show due to the costs, the producers should have revamped their production strategies to get Lady O to reconsider or to get a green light from another network.

Tyler Perry is the master at keep production costs under control by minimizing sets. His primetime dramas can be insufferably boring, but that can be overcome with clever writing. The pacing of the Underground episodes would have necessarily had to change, but at least, the show would have been able to potentially continue production.
