Jada Pinkett Smith Pens Open Letter Slamming Golden Globes For Snubbing Tiffany Haddish & ‘Girls Trip’

Published: Tuesday 12th Dec 2017 by Sam

Summer smash ‘Girls Trip’ delivered one of the biggest box office slays of the year; and yet when the nominations for the 2018 Golden Globes were revealed yesterday, the comedy was nowhere to be found.

Nor was its breakout star Tiffany Haddish, whose career has soared to astronomic heights on the back of the movie’s success.

And Jada Pinkett is not impressed.

See what she had to say below…

It all started when outspoken Jada hinted at her displeasure on Twitter.

She followed up today with an open letter…

I’m not upset about @TiffanyHaddish or @GirlsTripMovie not getting a nom… I’m discouraged about the fact that the Hollywood Foreign Press/@goldenglobes wouldn’t even WATCH the movie.

Girls Trip was one of the most successful films this summer & Tiff was hands down the funniest person on screen in 2017 and we couldn’t get eyes on the film or a press conference. How could a nom happen & how much more critical acclaim must a movie have to simply get a screening?

But yet… Tiff has been asked to present at their ceremony. This isn’t about shaming, this is about the need for discussion of an antiquated system.

And I dare not invalidate all the many journalist and people from all walks of life who have supported this movie by defining the issue as simply… racism.

Hollywood has systems in place that must learn to expand its concepts of race, gender equality and inclusion in regard to its perceptions of art across the board.

The fact that the brilliance of @TheBigSickMovie went unnoticed and the fact that one of the most prolific films of the year, @GetOutMovie, is considered a comedy… illuminates the depths of the sunken place… for real.

Moments like this occur so that we have an opportunity to discuss, recreate and regenerate old paradigms. It’s all about growth. Love.

*********

This isn’t the first time Jada has used her platform to voice her concerns. She was one of the integral names at the heart of the #OscarsSoWhite debate.

In any case, do you agree with Jada?

Your thoughts?

Girl the movie was decent and funny, but not worthy of anyone’s award. Like come on people. We can’t play the race card every single time we don’t get the noms or wins we want.

Now don’t get me wrong, there are countless instances that black actress/artist were done completely wrong and race was every bit of the reason. But this is one time it wasn’t.

Meme. You out of everyone. I’ve always admired your sense of intelligence on this blog, but I see you are not cultured on film and stereotypes of the movie industry. Bridesmaids, Jennifer Lawrence etc, Amy Schumer. All these movies get recognized and they are mediocre as hell yet girls trip which not only was the funniest movie of the year and broke boundaries because of its ethnic group gets snubbed and only 2 nominations for get out, the most critically acclaimed movie of the year not even best director how? You are an irrelevant flop, just like these awards. Bye!

      • Meme December 12, 2017

You are right, I don’t know much about the movie industry. And I was speaking of Girls Trip only. I saw it, I like, but I personally don’t think it’s worthy any award. I feel like I’ve seen that exact same movie theme 10 different times before.

I’m going to have to agree with her on this Tiffany was funny and the movie what it was. The recognition and nominations Melissa McCarthy received for “Bridesmaids” is the same Tiffany should get. The reason why I mention Melissa is because the was a comedy as well. Jada may talk a lot it may irritate people, but she is not lying. Hollywood continues to remain in a sunken place.

Bruh and Amy schumer got nominated for trainwreck. That movie itself was a trainwreck!!! Like I don’t understand, please name one person who was funnier all year in any movie? The press tour, the fact that this had never happened with people of color. the fact that this women was homeless, became the first on SNL, her book, like what more does a n**** gotta do to get recognized. And what makes me upset is that Tiffany is genuinely funny like its God given. If you look at interviews for example even of Mellissa Carthy, its not who she is. Man, with the sexual assaults, racism, f*** these awards, at this point they mean nothing!!!!!

@Meme I think the bigger issue is that the movie wasn’t even watched to begin with, thus, which is far worse than watching a movie and then saying it sucks. The fact that it wasn’t even watched is what this issue is.

I truly don’t understand all of the hoopla centered around Girls Trip. Was it funny and good for a some laughs, yeah of course. Was it worthy of being nominated for a damn Golden Globe? Nah fam, it wasn’t. Just because a movie comes out and does well commercially, that doesn’t mean it deserves to sweep award ceremonies. It’s great to see Tiffani really taking off and doing well since her performance in the movie, that’s the real win here!

Jada only says something about these award nominations when it’s someone she knows or is affiliated with. First she went off about her husband, now it’s Tiffany. Girl, stop being a pitbull for white folks’ validation. Support the NAACP Image Awards which will be broadcast live on MLK Day. By the way, everyone go vote for who and what you want to win at the NAACP Image Award website. The voting closes this Friday.

So now she will do this every year ?

  5. Austin December 12, 2017

the movie was really good ah think it deserves noms c’mon people that movie was funny especially tiff

  6. The Wig Snatcher December 12, 2017

    Jada, Girl. No.

  7. TAMMAH December 12, 2017

I Love Jada, But Girl, You Should’ve Kept Your Tweets To Yourself. Viola Davis Would Never! Viola Takes Snubs As A Grain Of Salt & Works Harder On Her Craft. No Complaints, No Blaming The People, Just Good Ol Fashion HARD WORK!

    • Ejai December 12, 2017

And that’s the reason it took her so long….she stayed silent and took what they dished out to her….instead of standing in her truth. She waited for them to tell her she was worthy…instead of standing for her worth!

      • TAMMAH December 12, 2017

But Guess What? It Wasn’t Too Late For Viola To Know What She Stands For & Wht She’s Worth. We Can’t Expect Everyone To Know About Their Truth Once They’re Born. It Takes Time! Ok Yes, It Took Long …It Wasn’t God’s Plan For Her To Shine In The Early 2000s. It Was Viola’s Time To Shine Now! I Bet If She Did Wht Jada is Doin’ Earlier In Her Career, They Would Probably Blackball Viola & She Will Be Irrelevant. Viola Can Stand For Her Worth Now Because She Established A Platform, But That’s Not The Point. The point Im Tryna Say Is If You Don’t Like Somethin’, Change It Or Continue To Work Harder. Sometimes it’s Not All About Race! Maybe The Movie Was Simply Not Up To Their Caliber To Add On The Nomination.

      • Isabelle December 14, 2017

        Now you’re being idiotic.

    • Miss Salt Gawl December 12, 2017

The lies you tell. Viola is a phenomenal actress and always has been, however it took white america 15+ years to decide that. Meanwhile Jennifer lawerence receives acclaim and she can’t act her way out of a wet paper bag.

      • TAMMAH December 13, 2017

I Don’t Hear Viola Complainin’. It Took Taraji 20 Years, But I Hear no Complaints! As Long As You Get It, It Shouldn’t Matter When Your Shine Comes!

      • Isabelle December 14, 2017

        And so are you.

  8. Dominick December 12, 2017

The movie sucks. Tiff was funny but NOT THAT funny so yeah, I stand behind my opinion. The movie was cliche, nothing new, bad ending. Fun to watch but not in the movie, fun to watch at home while doing laundry.

    • Jeans December 12, 2017

I agree with you, and definitely not nom- worthy.

  9. Meteorite December 12, 2017

People are missing the point, she’s upset that the Hollywood Foreign Press and Goldenglobes didn’t even WATCH the movie.
That and the fact that they put Get Out in the Comedy category.
Did any of you guys watch Gabriel Union’s interview? She talked about this very thing.

    • Fancy BISH December 12, 2017

Gabby served the whole POT of tea in that interview!

      • MK December 13, 2017

        Where is this interview?

  10. Bianca December 12, 2017

U all didn’t get what she was saying in regards to it NOT being nominated. They didn’t even watch it nor did the movie receive press conferences but still asked Tiffany to be a presenter. She’s saying the same thing u all we’re saying about the Grammys. Beyoncé was reduced to an urban artist and rih didn’t win one even though their fan bases feel they deserved more. No difference just the industry that’s being called out. Every argument that was had about the Grammys is what she is speaking on. I blame the artists and actors and actresses, as soon as they make it big they abandon the black award shows that they used as a platform that recognizes them to go to the ones that only use them for ratings and presenting . They won’t even include black artists for tributes for black artists not one.

  11. Achooo! December 13, 2017

It’s very sad that many people can not comprehend and missed the point completely. Jada is 100% right.

  12. StarXavi December 13, 2017

The fact that the movie was not even watched is definitely a problem for me if true, but even if it were watched I don’t believe any of the performances in the movie deserve a nomination, but it does deserve the fair chance of a nomination. I’m an actor and one thing I can say about Bridesmaids and Trainwreck is that both of those movies were written by and acted by the star of the film. No shade at all, but Tiffany Haddish was basically playing herself in the movie. All of her mannerisms seen in the movie are seen in all her interviews, there was no real departure from self. Melissa McCarthy in Bridemaids played someone very far from who she is in life and although Amy was also playing a version of herself there were distinct differences and she was more involved with the creative process of the movie itself. Just my opinion.

  13. REALtalk! December 14, 2017

The only award I can see this movie winning is a bet award and when I say “bet” that stands for b**** eat turkey, because this movie wasn’t Oscar worthy, not even Oscar Mayer worthy.

  14. KING B!! December 16, 2017

Omg.. U people are always whining or madd about something .. Can never go a day without complaining… STFU
