LGBT Music Industry Brunch Ignites Diversity Debate

Published: Tuesday 29th May 2018 by David

An LGBT music industry brunch organised by ‘Variety‘ has raised questions surrounding LGBT’s community’s exclusion of its black brothers and sisters and the privileges white men within the community are said to use to erase their contributions to the arts.

Full story below…

Keen to celebrate the industry’s LGBT players, ‘Variety‘ hosted a brunch in West Hollywood and welcomed several familiar faces to engage in a discussion on the music business, entertainment and how their experiences had been pushed or pulled by homophobia.

Fortunately, or unfortunately, a snap taken at the event highlighted a major problem many say white gay men are unwilling to address.

Critics argued that that gay white men (though persecuted for being gay) are afforded the same privileges as their heterosexual siblings in spaces which are inhospitable for people of colour.

The gay community is segregated also. You have the “white pride” and you have the “black/hispanic” prides. This is not NOT in that community. I’ve always asked, why is there a “white gay pride” and a Black “gay pride” festival. White Gay men like women as friends, but they seemingly have an “issue” also with Gay women, Esp Black Gay women.

hell yea if your not slim, and have abs or super attractive then your gonna have a hard time lol! Its visual community as EVERYTHING is based off LOOKS.. The straight community isnt as intense as far as looks so they dont have to deal with as much as we do! That pic is redic as we all know black men and women do the REAL work in the entertainment industry! Boi BYe to this mess!

Uh, black singers and writers were invited and chose not to go. lol. They even tweeted that they were invited. Nice clickbait. Yeesh.

    • Stars Are Blind 98 May 29, 2018

Not quite. They invited two and neither could come. The wider point is why only two were invited when the industry is driven by black gay men. I couldn’t tell you who half the men in that picture are.

Disagree. How can the black gay community attack the white gay community when the black gay community has its own issues within itself and with being accepted in the black community. Let’s not use white people as the punching bag for our own issues that we are battling . Let’s fix our own in house problems before we start to attack whites on what we let our own people get away with. Also let’s not pretend like we have a mass black lgtbq .

    • Stars Are Blind 98 May 29, 2018

If that’s the case how can the white gay community bash the straight community for homophobia when most hate crimes against LGBT people are carried out by self-hating LGB people? You see how slippery that slope is. The truth is that the white gays benefit from white supremacy and actually uphold homophobia by idolising heteronormativity. That is the truth. A white man can sleep with a homophobic man and leave that room unharmed. Happens everyday. A black man or a woman cannot sleep with a racist man and say the same.

    • Stars Are Blind 98 May 29, 2018

And another thing. Beyond the fact that most, if not all, of the trends and vocal stylings you cling to are created by black people white gays also have the benefit of being related to their oppressors. When a white woman finds out her son is gay she has to make a decision on whether or not she will continue to love that son and has the power to change his life by voting for pro LGBT laws that directly benefit her kin. This is why gay rights have been so successful in the last decade. Your moms, dads, uncles and aunts are pushing for legislation they know will make your life easier. Black people don’t have that luxury as the people who oppressing them have no familial or emotional ties to them meaning we have to fend ourselves. If you don’t believe me, compare the way BLM protestors are treated compared to the teens whose survived the school shooting. Straight White familie are only interested in liberal laws when they benefit their pockets or their gay relatives. Same goes for the white feminism movement.

Whoa!!! You this s*** in ALLL CAPS!

    • Hey girl hey May 29, 2018

When you make comments like this, it’s shows how ignorant you are. Yes we as the black community have our own set of issues, which started with our white suppressors. Us black gays not being magority at that table is a problem. N in the times that we are in especially with social media, u really to be clear about which side yourll be standing on when the dust clears. Cuz trust we as the black community will n have always overcome adversity.

Majority of gays are self hating, racists and they love to play the victim ad nauseum. Whites been stealing for centuries like culture, land, countries, history ad Infinitum. No one should be flummoxed.

Well, I think I see Sean Garret in a red hat “hiding”, which doesn’t help to change how the public views DL black men. Also, I notice a few men that seem to be Latino at this brunch. However, like many of you mentioned, where is everyone that makes up LGBT. His image could have been HUGE for he right reasons. You have Linda Perry, TC who has written for Tamar, Frank Ocean, etc.

This just makes me want to get out their and contribute as a songwriter even more.

  8. A&R May 29, 2018

So glad this is happening. For one, my experience shows that man black people swear the alternative lifestyle is an epidemic that’s sweeping the black community only lol. Bruh, when I tell you the concept of race is so paralyzing. Y’all don’t remember the video TI did talking about homosexuality being a tool that the white man is using to hold back black men? Now we have gay white men finally uniting on a public front. I’m waiting to see if any black people will make note of this milky gay situation and realize this isn’t just a black experience.
My other thought, this is a huge reason why I’m anti gay but understand the sexualities. This whole “gay” movement is has a political agenda that uses the classic U.S. method of building a foundation on the backs of black Americans while denying them access to the gains made. Instead of letting people with Q**** sexual preferences uniquely express it, Gayness is used to unite them when it’s most convenient but is also used to divide them WHEN IT’S MOST CONVENIENT lol

This s*** is crazy! And it’s crazy because the whole point is to fight for normalcy yet there is so much exclusion and elevation of what’s different as opposed to what is similar and how we are all alike.

    Smh…man, I just can’t.

  11. Reflect me May 29, 2018

All I know is the black gays has reeked havoc on the black community with their Stan Culture, idol worship, vitriol (see bey) hive and have gotten black women to follow and emulate their hell born behavior. I wish they were more accepted in the lgbt community so they can stay out and not dominate black womens spaces

    • SMH May 29, 2018

Chile shut up, you sound like a real idiot thats been brainwashed by the white lgbt community for too long.

      • Reflect me May 29, 2018

And you sound like one of the types I was referring to. Anti intellectual idiots that need to be quarantined away from the larger society.

  12. SMH May 29, 2018

Not surprised. Just like the womens’ rights/feminist movement wasn’t created for black women, the gay rights movement was not created with gay & lesbian people of color in mind.

    • Stars Are Blind 98 May 29, 2018

That’s why they can fix their mouths to say that women got the right to vote in one year overlooking the HUGE fact that black women didn’t get the right to vote until decades after. They think that they are the standard.

  13. Jeans May 29, 2018

WHite men want to use black men in the bedroom but don’t want to invite them to dinner for a brunch? Smh. SAD!

    • Stars Are Blind 98 May 29, 2018

Once more for those in the back! They cross the street when they see us, look away when we’re killed but spend hours on hook up dates hoping one of us is foolish enough to fulfill their Mandingo meets Twink fantasies in an apartment complex they hope we’ll never be able to afford to live in.

      • Jasmine (The Real Jasmine) May 29, 2018

Stars that sounds horrible but I believe everybody you wrote. I read the comments and it seems to me like their is deep racism and segregation between white and black gays but gays don’t speak on it publicly.
