Published: Monday 9th Jul 2018 by Rashad

The first ever authorized recount of the life of Whitney Houston finally found its way to theaters this weekend (July 6).

Featuring interviews from the late pop icon’s family (including her mentor Clive Davis, brothers, mother, sister-in-law, and more), the film – which had already won rave reviews and notoriety from Cannes Film Festival – followed that acclaim with a number of thumbs up from respected critics across print and online publications.

Now, with its wide release opening weekend behind it, the Kevin MacDonald-directed flick has finally garnered the acclaim that matters most:  its commercial response. Look inside to see just how much the film raked in over the weekend:

‘Whitney’ Opening Weekend: $1.27 million

Via THR:

Over the July 6-8 weekend, filmmaker Kevin Macdonald’s Whitney, which looks at the turbulent life and tragic death of the singer, opened to $1.2 million from 454 theaters following its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

Congratulations are certainly due to the doc which opened against the likes of ‘Ant-Man’ and more heavy-hitters.

It was a GREAT movie. Whitney’s performances, footage, drugged out footage and honesty was perfection. I went in thinking this gonna be bull, but it was actually real, brutal and lovely

This movie was really well done! I feel like it was so packed with truth, but filled with compassion at the same time! We really got to see Whitney at her finest, but the film didn’t shy away from sensitive topics! We saw Whitney triumph and become a global superstar, but, we heard all about her personal troubles! All I could do was be grateful that I was able to witness her amazing talents! It’s so difficult revisiting this kind of loss! The movie was a big reminder of that! Still, I had such a wonderful experience celebrating Whitney with people I didn’t even know, sitting beside me in wonderment of her beauty, musical gifts and magnetic personality! Whitney will never know what she meant to so many! Whitney had her vices, but she had a heart of an angel!
