March 27, 2020 marks the U.S. premiere of the once highly anticipated live action remake of Disney’s classic animated feature film, ‘Mulan.’
Seven months ahead of the flick’s release, however, there’s been an international call for boycott thanks to some controversial political support thrown from the direction of Liu Yifei – the Chinese-American actress cast as the production’s leading lady.
Details inside:
Hong Kong is smack dab in the middle of political turmoil thanks to reports of anti-government protesters clashing with local police authorities over the unveiling of controversial legislation (click here to read). Amidst the uproar, Yifei took to Weibo (China’s leading social media platform) to say:
“I support Hong Kong’s police, you can beat me up now #ISupportTheHongKongPolice.”
Needless to say, her stance wasn’t appreciated by locals. Voicing their disappointment via the hashtag #BoycottMulan, their cries were heard across the ponds and – not even a day later – the phrase was trending internationally. See highlights below:
As of time reported Yifei nor Disney have responded to the backlash.

So That Grape Juice is communist? Like do not make it like Hong King is off? This is an irresponsible headline. #hateit
You’re an idiot ?
I don’t think it’s fair to boycott something that was put together by a whole cast and crew because of one person’s behavior. She’s wrong… she grew up in the US. She never got to face what those people are facing right now.
This ?
She made an ignorant statement but all the white US clapbacks are just as stupid. ?♀️
Her movie sucks and will bomb anyway….
Just enjoy the movie
The Hong Kong protesters are being paid by the CIA to cause trouble for China. That’s why they are flying USA flags and saying “liberate us President Trump!”
