The Muses: 10 Names Disney MUST Consider for the Live Action ‘Hercules’

Published: Friday 8th May 2020 by Rashad

As we reported here last week, Disney is breathing new life into its classic animated feature ‘Hercules.’

Having strong-armed the box office competition upon its 1997 release (to the tune of over $252 million grossed world wide), there are undoubtedly great expectations for its soon-to-come live action remake.

And, while the re-adaptation’s official cast has yet to be announced, fans of the original have already begun throwing in the names of modern day favorites to fill the shoes of the main hero and other memorable characters from the film.

With a focal part of ‘Herc’s story being the narration by the Gospel-flavored Muses, That Grape Juice has assembled the top 10 ladies we at least want to be part of the conversation when Disney considers who should don their iconic white gowns.

See our list inside and sound off:

In the original film, The Muses – Calliope, Clio, Melpomene, Terpsichore, and Thalia – are a sassy and soulful quintent who energetically recount the myth of ‘Hercules.’  Their whimsical narration, chock full of soaring vocals and high octane choreography, was not only a cultural nod from Disney but also the first time one of their animations featured content that was so unapologetically Black.

To recreate those scenes in a live action format, the enlisted would not only have to have the voices but also the style, grace, glamour, and harmony afforded the first fivesome.

Below, we’ve rounded up 10 names we hope are shortlisted to do the job.

Ryan Destiny

KeKe Palmer

Jennifer Hudson

Teyana Taylor

Amber Riley

Anika Noni Rose

Cynthia Erivo

All of these would be great as the muses except normani and solange

  4. Cmon+B May 8, 2020

HELL NOOOOO …. we need to put all effort in getting June’s Diary this role.

They are perfect for this – They are not bigger names than the other ladies but as unit they sings better than all of them.

This would be so smart of Disney because it would give them a chance to create 5 new stars. They can say that they brought the these talented women to the forefront.

      • xXNotSoNiceXx May 8, 2020

    • Pat May 8, 2020

      I could live w that

  5. King z May 8, 2020

    I vote for June’s Diary!

  6. Clarks0o0ñ May 8, 2020

    Normani cant sing
Stop trying to make that girl happen

Look at how she sticks out like a sore thumb in the midst of all these talented accomplished black singers/actresses

What has normani achieved to be put in the same category with oscar nominated actresses and singers?

    My choices

Cynthia erivo (Tony winner , Grammy winner, oscar nominated)

    Patina miller (tony winner)

Davine Rudolph joy (tony nominated actress)

    Condola Rashad (tony nominated actress)

Audra McDonald (5 time tony winner)

  7. Clarks0o0ñ May 8, 2020

They keep forcing this normani girl on us.
    Can u people stop

Every list they always try to slip her in.

I saw a list, Pop girls who are ruling 2020, normani’s name was on the list, even tho she hasnt seen the inside of the billboard hot 100 since November last year.

      Awwwwww you’re mad SEETHE

  8. Clarks0o0ñ May 8, 2020

I love the idea of anika nonu rose she has won a tony award

Carmen ejogo ( the problem is, she’s very light skin)

Danielle Brooks (tony nominated, orange is the new black)

Uzo aduba (2 time emmy winner, golden nominated , crazy eyes from orange is the new black, she can sing)

Sophie okonedo (tony winner, she’s also oscar nominated for best supporting actress for her performance in hotel Rwanda)

Octavia Spencer, she probably the most decorated black actress working today. She is talented as hell. She has good comedy timing and can do drama also.
Can she sing? I dont know.

    Jennifer Hudson can’t sing.
    She screams
She ruins every song with her excessive screaming

Lizzo will pull focus from the movie.
She wouldn’t know how to disappear into the role.

Pls they should hire actresses who know how to act and sing and have critical acclaim.

  9. LCJ May 8, 2020

    Kelly Fkin Rowland !!!!!!!

  10. Clarks0o0ñ May 8, 2020

Queen Latifah will be good also.
She is an oscar nominated actress.
    She can sing.
    She can rap.
If the director of the movie wants to make the movie current and spice things up, there can be a song with a rap verse and queen Latifah would deliver flawlessly.

U guys are basing ur picks on physical appearance, who is the most beautiful, who is a bad bìtch etc without taking into account these women’s acting skills.

I would have included lupita nyong’o but I dont know if she can sing.

    • Lanafan1 May 8, 2020

      STFU omg

  11. Julien May 8, 2020

No! Amber and Anika, yes. Deborah C** needs to be the Muse inspired by Whitney.

  12. Interac May 8, 2020

we all know brandy has the voice and acting chops, plus the experience on broadway……..

  13. Ropeburn May 8, 2020

I don’t know how I feel about a bunch of Black women standing in the background singing for a White man. It was cute in Little Shop of Horrors but it’s time to move past this trope.

    • Baritenor_Guy May 8, 2020

You do know that actual voices in the animated movie were black women and the voice behind Hercules was a white man right?

  14. Clarks0o0ñ May 8, 2020

    Jill Scott
    Andra day
    Erykah badu (yes, why not?)

    • Clarks0o0ñ May 8, 2020

  15. Erica May 8, 2020

    Umm where’s Kelly ?

  16. The+truth+always+comes+to+light May 8, 2020

Glad this blog has no say so in the pickings!!! We need actual singers/divas! Experienced divas not potential one’s! The muses should be: Jennifer Hudson, Kelly Rowland, Amber Riley, Anika Noni Rose & Janelle Monae!

    • Boss+Up May 8, 2020

      Thanks you‼️👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

    • Clarks0o0ñ May 8, 2020

Seeing ur picks, glad u have no say so in the casting.

      Kelly Rowland? Lol

Its shows u dont know enough black actresses/singers.

    • Pu$$yPopstress May 9, 2020

How can u say u are glad tgj ain’t in control when four of the five you named are on their list?

U biiiiitches like to slam and hate for no reason

  17. Boss+Up May 8, 2020

The ONLY ones who need to be considered are Jennifer Hudson-She’s actually played Calliope the Head Muse before when she worked on the Disney’ Wonder Cruise Ship.
Amber Riley, Kelly Rowland, and Anika Noni Rose!

  18. Trav May 8, 2020

  23. Bam May 8, 2020

Love these h*** but Disney got that cheddar to make DC3 come sing. In The original Myths there were only three Muses so why not.

  24. Baritenor_Guy May 8, 2020

I don’t wanna see any names being considered if they haven’t done theater before (regional or broadway).

  25. Claudia Jordan May 8, 2020

Or they could cast five upcoming talents.

  26. Pat May 8, 2020

    Jazmine Sullivan
    Amber Riley
    Fantasia/ Kiki sheard

  27. DC3+FOREVER May 8, 2020

  28. Kelly fg Rowland May 8, 2020

  29. Charli+Cheer+Up May 8, 2020

Definitely June’s Diary! PS: i wonder if Disney is going to cast someone who is black like they did with Little Mermaid.

    • Charli+Cheer+Up May 8, 2020

  30. Sandra May 9, 2020

    KeKe Whyat

    Ari Lennox
    Alex Isley

    • king z May 9, 2020

Lianne and kelly price, yes. ari, maybe. the others, nah
