Eddie Murphy on Potential of Another ‘Coming To America’ Film: ‘There IS a Third One’

Published: Saturday 20th Mar 2021 by Rashad

Fans of Eddie Murphy‘s classic 1988 film, ‘Coming to America,’ had to wait over 30 years before its iconic, star-studded cast reunited for its sequel, ‘Coming 2 America.’

The highly touted venture, which premiered March 5 on Amazon Prime, continues to earn acclaim from movie lovers and industry critics alike – a feat underscored by calls for the follow-up’s follow-up.

Recently taking to our friends at Shadow & Act for a chat about the unsurprising success of the film’s part 2, Murphy surprised the interviewer when he detailed how he’s not only aware of the desire for a part 3 but is already plotting what it will look like.

Hear it from his lips inside:

Murphy on how ‘Coming 2 America’ came to be:

“We’d never thought about doing a sequel to this movie,” Murphy said. “It came to me because the movie hung around. [Coming to America] became apart of the culture and had a cult following. It was on TV all the time. People were saying lines and catchphrases like “Sexual Chocolate,” and people drop the mic now; Randy Watson was the first to drop the mic. People were dressing up on Halloween, and having Halloween parties as the characters, so the idea for the sequel popped up after I saw all of that five or six years ago.”

Murphy on if there will be a third installment or series version of the ‘Coming to America’ franchise:

‘There’s a third Coming to America,’ Eddie said before continuing, “but it takes place 16 years from now. I’ll have to be 75.  I’m serious, though.”

Oh gawd! Please don’t do this 🙄 the second one may have brought the views but the movie overalls isn’t that great…so if this next one gets alot of views he’s going to make another one after that? And another one after that if it’s successful? Can’t just leave it alone huh? 🙄

The STORY was on point in the second (it all made sense why he came back to America), the screenplay and direction not so much. But it had its laughable moments. I liked the ending arc. Bring John Landis back as director. ❤️

Please no. The 2nd film is one of Eddie’s absolute worst. None of the new characters were developed. Mirembe agreed to give up her life and go back to the U.S. to marry Lavelle 5 minutes after meeting him. It’s an awful story with bad subplots, terrible jokes and uninspired acting.

I agree with you on subplots and the talent of some of the new characters was questionable. The director and screenplay tried to squeeze elements of Black Panther into Coming 2 America. The pacing was off and has very few close up shots which are needed to deliver comedy. And the editing was bad. John Landis should of directed it because his rhythm and pacing was absolutely beautiful. Wesley Snipes character simply was not funny. But Leslie Jones was hilarious at times and weak at times… with John Landis directing she would of been brilliant. Her story could of been in the first film as well as her as an actress. She’s the on point part of the story I was referring to. She knocked boots with Hakeem back in the day and just saying that is hilarious. 😂

All of the older characters were used for nostalgic purposes when they had the best acting in the movie naturally …. 😂

I can go on about the music being off at times with John Legend desperately saving it with the “oh, say can you see” melody… but John Landis would have solved so many issues. And money was not an issue it was just used wrong. It didn’t tarnish the iconic original, and that is a relief in itself.

I can see Harlem night 2 which will
    Make more sense. But people
Are sensitive to the movie because of Richard Pryor and other great comedians. Harlem nights was about black great excellence comedians, but mainly a black movie. We have a lot of great comedians this generation. Harlem nights would be an easier storyline to make for a part 2. Just picture Eddie Murphy, Arsenio hall, Mike epps, Tiffany haddish, Kevin hart, lil rel, Tracy morgan, Leslie Jones, katt Williams etc.

It would’ve made more sense if his father had banished him from the kingdom or if his wife decided to leave him and move back to America, forcing eddie’s character to move. The fun in the first film was watching him get adjusted to being in America and that was completely lacking in the second.
