Published: Saturday 5th Feb 2022 by Sam

Since bursting onto the scene, Awkwafina has amassed a legion of fans and continues to nab roles on roles.

However, the comic has also received her fair share of criticism.

And much of that discourse of late has centered around what some are calling her habitual use of a “blaccent”  as the central engine of her comedy.

The term often refers to the employment of Afro-American dialect by people who aren’t Black.

Now, Awkwafina (born Nora Lum) is addressing the critique.

Full story below…

Via Twitter, she issued the following statement relating to her use of African American Vernacular English (AAVE) :

With that, what are…

if she truly believes all she’s typing then why didn’t this end with an apology? I like Awkwafina but this is weird

    • just saying February 5, 2022

because perhaps this is authentically the way she speaks?
i know a ton of asian and latinx people who grew up in urban, AA-populated neighborhoods, who speak AAVE. It’s called being a product of your environment. If this is how she grew up, why should she have to apologize for that?

if that’s what she believes (and honestly, that’s fair enough) then why justify herself tho? that’s what I’m saying, this statement is looong and neither here or there.

I don’t follow her, but it seems like there was a controversy/backlash so she addressed it? Doubtful she woke up and decided to put out a random statement about the way she speaks.

There is NO LATINX ITS LATINO OR HISPANIC.

she doesn’t need to apologize for anything. THAT’S WHY YOU’RE NOT HEARING AN APOLOGY.

      i said what i said.

She is nothing but walking a Gimmick. Take away her faux Blackness, and watch her disappear over night.

This, she doesn’t speak AAVE either. She did it purposely for the role in Shaung-Chi. She fid interviews befor where she lied and said she would never speak AAVE and yet she did another acting gig speaking “blaccent”, smh. This water down excuse is only to save face because of the backlash she’s getting.

Glad she addressed it. We as a nation have a history of belittling Asians as well as most people deemed other over the years.

She’s just a product of her environment I have seen other ethnicities grew up with other black ppl and just adapt to the surroundings. It’s not harmful or intentional and honestly this “blaccent” terminology is very stereotypical IMO and I’m black just saying.

    • akathexfactor February 6, 2022

She’s not a product of her “environment” she does it because it makes her money. She doesn’t normally speak with AAVE. 🙄
