First Look: ‘The Color Purple’ Cast Begin Production on Hotly Anticipated Movie Revival

Published: Sunday 20th Mar 2022 by Sam

Production on ‘The Color Purple’ revival is officially underway.

Full story below…

Eagerly anticipated, the latest reimaginging of Alice Walker’s 1982 novel takes on the format of a musical movie.

‘The Color Purple’ first hit the big screen with its 1985 film, which was led by Whoopi Goldberg in the role of Celie. Oprah Winfrey wowed in the role of Sofia and Steven Spielberg as its director. Later, the story was gifted life anew during its reinvention as a Tony Award-winning Broadway production.
This latest incarnation, which is helmed by Blitz Bazawule (who directed Beyonce’s ‘Black Is King’), is being anchored by an all-star cast that includes Fantasia Barrino reprising her role as Celie (from Broadway) in what is also her feature film debut.
Also on board are Danielle Brooks, Taraji P. Henson, H.E.R, Halle Bailey, Colman Domingo, and Corey Hawkins.
All of whom are snapped above for the first time together as production commences on the Warner Bros. film, which hits theaters on December 23, 2023.
Additional names have also been added into the mix too. Check out the full main cast:

Fantasia Barrino as Celie
Danielle Brooks as Sofia
Taraji P. Henson as Shug Avery
Colman Domingo as Mister
Corey Hawkins as Harpo
Halle Bailey as Young Nettie
H.E.R. as Squeak
Louis Gossett Jr. as Ol’ Mister
David Alan Grier as Reverand Avery
Tamela J. Mann as First Lady
Phylicia Mpasi as Young Celie
Deon Cole as Alfonso
Stephen Hill as Buster

Wow, they found Fantasia’s mini-me! I actually thought that was her in the yellow shirt until I blew up the picture and saw Fantasia was the one standing beside her in the head wrap. It’s a strong and talented cast. Yall better come thru.

Having seen Color Purple when it was on tour with Fantasia, I must say her performance as Celie is much like her onstage performances as a singer, simply moving, powerful and heartfelt. If she delivers as she has done on Broadway, then we are arguably looking at an Oscar winner for Best Actress..of which would be a total game-changer for her musical career. I would imagine she would experience the same type of fanfare and notoriety that Jennifer Hudson received…providing her access to a whole host of new high-profile opportunities. Might I add…Halle Berry remains the only woman of color to receive an Oscar for Best Actress. Just imagine if Fantasia becomes the second….Whoa!?!

I absolutely agree. Fantasia is great and grossly under appreciated.
