Aunjanue Ellis is the latest major name to onboard the big-screen revival of ‘The Color Purple.’

Full story below…

Warner Bros Pictures has announced that the Oscar-nominee has been cast in the role of Mama, the mother of Celie and Nettie.

No stranger to matriarchal roles, Ellis will breathe life anew into the character – who is billed as the embodiment of The Great Ancestor and the source of both Celie and Nettie’s awe-inspiring strength.

Hotly anticipated, the refreshed incarnation of Alice Walker’s 1982 novel takes on the format of a musical movie directed by Blitz Bazawule (who helmed Beyonce’s ‘Black Is King’).

Ellis (who earned praise aplenty for her performance in Warner’s ‘King Richard’ and is currently starring in ’61st Street’), joins an all-star cast. One which sees Fantasia Barrino reprising her role as Celie (from Broadway) in what is also her feature film debut.

Danielle Brooks, Taraji P. Henson, H.E.R, Halle Bailey, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, and Ciara are also in the mix.
‘The Color Purple’ first arrived on the big screen with its 1985 film, which was led by Whoopi Goldberg in the role of Celie. Oprah Winfrey wowed in the role of Sofia and Steven Spielberg was its director. Later, the story was gifted life anew during its reinvention as a Tony Award-winning Broadway production.
Mark those calendars because ‘The Color Purple’ – which sees Winfrey and Spielberg back as producers – lands in theaters on December 23, 2023.
