Mary J. Blige Signs First-Look Deal with BET, Readies New Talk Show ‘The Wine Down’

Published: Sunday 18th Dec 2022 by Sam

Mary J. Blige is already unquestionably a music icon. But rather than resting on said status, the Queen of Hip-Hop/Soul is adding fresh pages to her trailblazing story by making a mark in the TV and film arenas.

And MJB’s latest venture sees her continue along that trajectory in a major way.

Full story below…

Per Deadline, Blige and her production company Blue Butterfly have signed a first-look non-scripted deal and a second-look scripted deal with BET.

As part of the partnership, the GRAMMY and Emmy Award winner will develop a new talk show named The Wine Down. The series, which is already in development, “will bring together the hottest, most outspoken, highly sought-after people in entertainment, sports, social media, and politics” for “raw, provocative, insightful, and real conversations” over wine.

Aptly, Blige launched her own wine line Sun Goddess in 2020 alongside Italian winemaker Marco Fantinel. Hence, folk can expect a tie-in.

As well as the BET deal, Blige’sBlue Butterfly has locked in a first-look scripted TV deal with Lionsgate Television.

Booked and busy!

Speaking on the pact, Connie Orlando, BET’s EVP of Specials, Music Programming & Music Strategy said:

“As we strive to provide our audience with the best in biopics and documentaries, we are poised to remain at the forefront in offering high-quality, authentic on-screen portrayals of the lives of the culture’s most significant Black talent; and we are proud to supercharge the portfolio of content through our collaboration with Mary J. Blige’s production company, Blue Butterfly. Throughout her legendary career, Mary has blazed trails to become a global superstar. With Blue Butterfly, Mary develops awe-inspiring stories of the Black experience while uniquely using music to set the foundation. Mary has been a vital part of the BET family and we are eager to see our partnership flourish through this partnership.”

Go Mary! We love to see it!
