Rihanna Could Make History As First Black Female ‘Original Song’ Golden Globe Winner In Nearly 40 Years

Published: Monday 12th Dec 2022 by Rashad

Rihanna may have watched her long-awaited comeback single, ‘Lift Me Up,’ get lifted into Billboard record books with its impressive #2 debut in November (as we reported here), but the recently announced Golden Globe nominations see it poised to make history there as well.

On Monday (December 12), the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the 80th annual Golden Globe nods to toast the year’s best in international and American film and television.

Rih’s ‘Lift’ – the lead single from 2022’s ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ soundtrack – was among the 2023 ceremony’s five nominees for Best Original Song, going head to head with fellow Pop divas Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga as well as M.M. Keeravani and Alexandre Desplat. For Rih, the mention comes as a career first.

Despite the stiff competition, should ‘Lift’ manage to capture the award it will make the Bajan beauty the first Black woman to nab the trophy this century and second overall following the late Irene Cara, who accepted the honor at the 1984 Golden Globes for ‘What a Feeling’ (from ‘Flashdance‘).

Over the event’s 80-year history, there have only been eight Black winners in this category – Cara, Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie, Danger Mouse, John Legend & Common, Lamont Dozier, and Prince.

Will Rihanna be the ninth?  We’ll find out January 10, 2023, when the Golden Globe Awards are presented live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.
