Golden Globes: Zendaya Becomes 5th Black Woman To Nab Best TV Drama Actress Award In Show’s 80-Year History

Published: Tuesday 10th Jan 2023 by Rashad

In 2022, Zendaya – thanks to her critically acclaimed portrayal of “Rue Bennett” in HBO’s hit series ‘Euphoria‘ – made EMMYs history when she not only became the first Black woman to win Lead Actress in a Drama Series for a second time but also the youngest two-time winner of any EMMY category ever (as we reported here).

Now – courtesy of a victory at the 2023 Golden Globes (which aired January 10) – the multi-talented diva seems poised to extend her award show domination to yet another top industry ceremony.

Details inside.

On Tuesday night (January 10), Zendaya – despite being absent from the festivities – defeated Emma D’Arcy, Laura Linney, Imelda Staunton, and Hilary Swank for the Best Actress Performance in a TV Series (Drama) trophy at the 80th annual Golden Globes.

A historic triumph for Z, she becomes only the fifth Black woman to capture the honor since it was first handed out in 1962.  Her victory follows Gail Fisher (1973), Regina Taylor (1993), Taraji P. Henson (2016), and MJ Rodriguez (2022).

At writing, the 26-year-old ‘Euphoria’ star also sits in history books for being the youngest Black female performer to own this category’s trophy.
