As R.Kelly serves a 30-year sentence for sex crimes (and awaits sentencing for being convicted of similar crimes in other states), the embattled music legend continues to lose in the court of public opinion as more shocking allegations about his past surface thanks to the third and final installment of the groundbreaking ‘Surviving R. Kelly’ documentary.
Credited with fueling the latest round of investigations into the singer’s criminal past, the Lifetime series has not only garnered some of the network’s highest ratings but also earned praise for shining an overdue spotlight on his relationship with R&B songstress Aaliyah as well as other reported victims.
The late GRAMMY nominee is undoubtedly the most famous of the young women attached to accusations of his sexual abuse over the last 30 years as the two were illegally wed in 1994 when she was only 15-years-old (Kelly was 27).
In the latest installment of ‘Surviving’ (which aired January 2 and January 3), new allegations were made that Kelly forced Aaliyah and her family into silence through a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) following the annulment of their marriage. In the ‘I Believe I Can Fly‘ singer’s 2022 federal trial, the NDA was brought up in the courtroom as evidence.
“Prior to R. Kelly’s trial, journalist Jim DeRogatis — the reporter who first broke news of R. Kelly’s sexual abuse more than two decades ago — uncovered the NDA that R. Kelly used against Aaliyah. A few years ago, DeRogatis spoke about the documents that were leaked to him, stating in an interview that the annulment and Aaliyah’s legal claim against R. Kelly had been sealed.
‘It’s a harrowing document,’ he said. ‘A non-disclosure agreement on both her part and Kelly’s, vowing not to pursue further legal claims for physical abuse. So, it wasn’t just an underage sexual relationship, he hit her, allegedly, according to that court document.'”
While Aaliyah’s family declined to comment on the matter, people close to Kelly at the time of the marriage confirm the NDA existed in exchange for a financial incentive.
Gem Pratt, former friend and security guard for Kelly, claims Aaliyah’s father was furious over the marriage, forced its annulment, and entered a contractual arrangement with the ’12 Play’ hitmaker that stated the family wouldn’t press charges if they were sold the rights to his first three albums.
As of time reported, reps from Kelly’s camp have not responded to these claims.

Why would they make a deal to the rights of his first three albums? That’s not having your underage Daughter’s best interests at heart, that’s having your bank account’s best interests at heart – it shouldn’t be about money but about justice regarding your vulnerable child being abused.

What R. Kelly and his people did then and now is create cover stories and blame the victims, so I don’t know why anyone would be quick to believe what an alleged friend of his has to say about the motives and actions of Aaliyah and her family. They’ve always been a private family and they are afforded the right to not entertain every word from Kelly and his people.
