Legendary Director Mary Lambert: “I’ve Worked with Janet, Whitney, & Madonna…Brandy Has That Same Kind of Presence”

From peers to predecessors, Brandy has been no stranger to garnering acclaim from some of the industry’s biggest stars over her 30-year career.

Most recently, legendary film and music video director Mary Lambert added her name to the seemingly neverending list of those showering the multi-hyphenate diva with praise.

Hot on the promo trail in support of her latest film, Netflix’s ‘Best.Christmas.Ever.’ (starring Brandy and Heather Graham), Lambert didn’t hold back her adulation of the R&B icon.

“Singing is a different skill than acting. They can merge and they can support each other, but they’re different,” she told ComingSoon‘s Tyler Treese in a recent interview. “Not everybody who can sing as well as Brandy can also act, but Brandy has a long portfolio of really great performances.”

The festive flick, which also stars Jason Biggs and Matt Cedeno, soared to #1 on the streamer’s most-watched list the weekend following its November 16 premiere and came as the latest in a 40-year string of hit TV shows and films for the award-winning director that includes titles like ‘Pet Sematary,”Tales from the Crypt,’ ‘The Blacklist,’ and many more.

But, she’s just as well known for her contributions to Pop music history having helmed classic videos for the likes of megastar singer-actresses Madonna, Janet Jackson, and Whitney Houston. To Mary, Brandy’s star power fits in the same class as those iconic Pop divas.

“I’ve worked with a lot really great performers; Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, Annie Lennox and Madonna. They have that sort of presence, where they can hold the attention of a stadium with their voice, their presence and the story and narrative they’re creating on stage. Brandy has that,” the 72-year-old told ‘About You‘ magazine. “When she walked on the set, she just envelops you in it.”

The Netflix film isn’t Brandy’s only holiday-related offering.

Just a week ahead of the arrival of ‘Best’ the GRAMMY winner unwrapped her first yuletide album, ‘Christmas with Brandy,’ led by the romantic single ‘Christmas Party for Two.’
